Hey yall I recently visited Thailand in November into December and I fell in love with the culture the lifestyle and everything else about Thailand I’m from the US and I desperately want to move to Thailand. I’m not sure what route to take. I know there’s visa options but I’m not sure. Which one I should apply for as I want to stay long-term a year or more. If any of you have advice on what route to take, I would love to hear I’m retired by medical discharge from the military and I do have, a pension coming in although I’m only 38 years old and now at the retirement age

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user expresses a desire to move to Thailand long-term but is unsure of the visa options available. Comments suggest several possible routes, such as the Elite Visa, Education Visa, and involvement in business. Some users recommend hiring a visa service for assistance, while others share experiences of living between multiple Southeast Asian countries to avoid visa complications. Caution is advised regarding immigration rules and the potential issues with living on tourist visas.

I think what you meant to say was you prefer Thai culture over American culture. USA has a lot of culture. I’ve been to Thailand and enjoy it but US has too many conveniences that are hard to forget about. You have to remember you will always be a visitor and a foreigner in Thailand regardless of your visa

you probably know all the

Air quality can be checked

I spent 3.5 years going around different countries in south east asia on tourist visa.. maybe check out some other countries and places in the countries before deciding to settle any one place.
Aaron ******
I would suggest visiting other similar countries first.

One can be a long term tourist in some (Philippines is basically forever) while being nomadic between several keeps you within the rules of being a tourist in others.

Yes there are ways to stay in Thailand long term before 50. Some are grey area and some are 100% above board.

But until you have experienced several countries and areas within each you really can’t know what you like or don’t.

Given Thailand doesn’t want people living there on the wrong visas it is worth traveling more to be sure you want to put in the effort.

Once you are 50 as long as you have the income/assets it is relatively easy to stay in Thailand.

Before that why not not make sure it is best for you?
Frank **********
Unfortunately all that is irrelevant in Thailand. A retirement visa is for people 50 and over. There are Education Visas, Non B Visa if you have a job in Thailand. Other long term visas with high financial requirements. Best to take a peek at the Thai Embassy website in the US for visa types and requirements. Thank you for your service from a retired Army NCO.

it’s either a invest into a business with money to get your visa since you’re under 50 or education visa.🙏🌞🇹🇭

Look at the elite visa, or privilege visa as it’s now called, it’s probably your best option. You might be retired in the US but to get any visa based on retirement for Thailand you must be minimum 50 years old.
Peter ********
Go back there for 90 days on a tourist visa and do more research, you can’t go somewhere for a few weeks and decide you want to retire there. SO many people make the same mistakes over and over 🤔

Multiple entry tourist visa gets you 9 months .

It's very easy to stay 11 months without worries if you time it right. Come around June 5th with a 60 day tourist visa, extend it for 30 days, then do two land border runs with extensions for an extra 4 months. That should then take you right to the beginning of January when you can then do 2 more land border runs with extensions. Voila!

that’s kinda what I’d like to do is be able to travel all around Asia

Could you explain this in more detail please
Duncanc **********
@Erik ********
Sure.

Thailand gives you 30 days on arrival. (Extend to 60 days in country)

Malaysia gives you 90 days on arrival

Vietnam gives me 45 days on arrival (not sure about US)

So just bounce between the countries. Flights are very cheap

You could also add Cambodia to the list
Erik *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Duncanc *********
see that what I was thinking is that legal ? Also how many times am I able to reenter ?
Lien ******
@Erik ********
as US citizen you have to apply for visa before arriving in Vietnam which gives you 90 days. Vietnam doesn't do extension so you have to leave VN after 90 days
Duncanc **********
@Erik ********
It’s perfectly legal to be a tourist in most countries.

There is no limit to the number of times you can enter a country. (Thailand has a restriction on land border crossings. I believe twice a year but I always fly so never worried about that)

If you’re planning on something other than visiting then you need to apply for the appropriate visa. From your description of your plan you’ll be fine on tourist entry.
Frances ********
@Duncanc *********
I would completely agree; we’ve been coming to Thailand since 2016 on 30 day exemptions, stay 30 days, fly out to Bali or Malaysia or wherever and stay/visit there at least 2 weeks. Then return to Thailand on a new 30 day exemption (we’re US). We entered Thailand once in 2023 like this. Entered first time from Vietnam. We stayed 30 days then left for Malaysia; stayed in Penang about 10 days then flew to Laos and stayed for 10 days there. Then flew back to Thailand expecting another 30 day exemption. Actually, this “second” entry was the first in 2024! But my partner was chastised by the immigration officer! She scolded him “next time get a proper visa”. We are both retirement age, but do not wish to retire here in Thailand. We just want to stay 60-90 days. After my partner was scolded, something was typed into the computer and he was given his 30 day exemption stamp. We both were surprised and still don’t comprehend what, if anything, we did wrong. We come to Thailand and visit here and all over SoEastAsia every year. We didn’t apply for a 60 day visa because none of our trips involved staying 60 days in one stretch of time here in Thailand. But now I’m wondering if immigration isn’t happy with people arriving on a 30 day exemption more than just once. Air or land.

@Duncanc *********
thank you 🙏

Is there restrictions as to how long I have to be out of the country before I return like a day or 30 days before I return
Duncanc **********
@Erik ********
Nothing written - but your story needs to make sense/be believable to the immigration officer.

Somebody flying out for an hour and turning straight around isn’t breaking any rule - but it looks like obvious abuse of the system.

Don’t abuse the system.

Why would somebody fly out to Malaysia and then turn around without actually seeing anything?

Oh yeah … they’re working illegally and need to be back at work or some other dumb shit.
Roberto *********
At 38 the best option is Elite Visa
Lien ******
Are you medical discharged or medical retired from the military? The reason why I'm asking is medical discharge doesn't give you Tricare so you only have VA as health insurance but they only cover service connected conditions overseas and its a pain to claim with them. So either have medical insurance or money in case something happens (but usually you have to pay upfront then get reimbursement no matter which insurance).

Visa since you're not at retirement age you can't get retirement visa. Other options would be marriage, education visa, investment visa, or visa run
Erik *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Lien *****
I am not medically discharged I am honorably discharged with service connected disability for ptsd

Could you explain the investment visa and the visa run ?
Lien ******
@Erik ********
so technically you aren't retired from the military either. You're just honorable discharge and receive VA benefits due to your health conditions which means you only have the VA as health insurance and for overseas you have to enroll into VAFMP but as I've said it's only for service connected conditions and it takes forever to get reimbursement according to many vets.

Investment visa not many recommend this for long stay because it's a lot to handle and you only can own 49% of the company and 51% has to be owned by a Thai.

Visa run I was told by many that I could apply for METV to get in which gives me 60 days after that I have to request for extension which gives me another 30 days. After those 90 days I have to leave thailand to go to the neighbor countries and apply for METV again to repeat the process but I would ask someone specifically who has done that because Thailand changes visa rules like changing underwear 😂
Wylie *******
@Lien *****
an METV visa is good for 6 months. Each time one enters on that visa they get 60 days which can be extended to 90 as you say. The part you are getting incorrect is you don't have to apply for a new one after that if the visa is still valid. All you have to do is leave the country and return to get another 60 day entry stamp and 30 day extension using the same visa. If you get your timing right and then leave the country and return just prior to to the visa expiring you can do it a 3rd time. All total one can get close to 9 months of stay in Thailand out of an METV.
Lien ******
@Wylie ******
oh ok, that's even better. Thanks for correcting me
Dianne *****
@Lien *****
also you can't get another METV from.a neighbouring country, you have to return to your own country to get a subsequent METV. However you can get a SETV from Thai embassies or consulates in neighbouring countries. However the days of living on back to back tourist visas ended around 2017
Ernesto ********
@Lien *****
sorry marriage is not an option for him as well. Visa run is not an option either.
Lien ******
@Ernesto *******
if he marries a Thai then surely he can get marriage visa.

Visa run surely works if he applies for METV that allows him to stay 60 days then request extension for 30 days. After those 90 days he leaves Thai to Vietnam or wherever and repeats. I've never done it but read many have and was recommended to do that
Ernesto ********
@Lien *****
at this moment he does not quality for a marriage extension. Visa runs are not viable long term options
Erik *********

@Ernesto *******
why wouldn’t I qualify?

You are technically not retired. You are just choosing not work. You are separated from military due to medical issues. Those realities don’t qualify for any visa outside tourist visa or elite visa. Maybe get an education visa or find a job in Thailand

Ok, maybe it’s a good idea to start with a Multiple Entries Tourist Visa first. This gives you up to nine months first and you can renew at home or apply for a up too three months single entry Tourist Visa after. Be aware of if you later want to have a permanent retirement visa you anyway have to show proof of 800K in a Thai bank when you apply for the first one year extension from TH.

if you want long term stay in Thailand, you need long term visa. Your do not qualify for extension of visa based on retirement. You need either education or find a Thai employer to sponsor you
