What should I do if my banking app in Thailand gets suspended due to SIM and account name inconsistency?

I’ve just had my banking app temporarily suspended.

I was notified last week that my banking app would be suspended due to my name on my account and my sim not matching. I opened both with my passport.

However I decided to fulfil their wishes, I went to my SIM card provider and got the required receipt showing my name and phone number, I then duly went to my bank and provided the receipt from the phone company, my passport and I was photographed again.

Naturally I thought ok job done everything should be ok no banking app suspension for me.

Tit, my banking app was suspended today. I will now have to visit my bank and go through this again I guess.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around the recurring issue of banking app suspensions faced by expats in Thailand, particularly due to mismatches between registered names on SIM cards and bank accounts. Many users have shared their experiences of visiting banks to update their information, only to encounter further suspensions despite taking corrective actions. Others express frustration over systemic inefficiencies and the lack of clear communication from banks, with specific references to Bangkok Bank and KBank. The conversation highlights the challenges expats face with the banking system in Thailand, especially regarding compliance with regulations related to personal information.

You need to visit your branch and update all of your details with the branch.

They asked me for my address, my occupation and passport. I gave them a copy of my rental agreement, made copies of my passport and I had to sign about 6 pages of documents.

They updated and everything was restored with immediate effect.

I too thought I only had to visit any branch, updating my phone number which is connected to the bank app. But they actually want us to update all of our details at the branch who we opened the account at. The lady said this will be needed every 2 years going forward.
Chris *****
Just found out this today even though I did an update at the Bangkok Bank branch on 27 May 2025. 🙄

@Chris ****
Where did you buy that sim-card?
Chris *****
Max *************
@Chris ****
In person with your passport? And how is it possible it doesn't match the name in your mobile banking app?
Chris *****
@Max ************
yes I bought it at the airport 3-4 years ago when I had a tourist visa. I used my old passport so maybe due to old passport number not matching new passport number with bank account.
Max *************
@Chris ****
It says your name on the sim-card doesn't match the name in your mobile banking. When renewing the passport,you must go to your branch to update personal settings, meaning the passport number. Same with phone number when changing sim-card, and email-address if you for some reason have a new one.
Chris *****
@Max ************
I did the ID verification at AIS today, topped up 100 baht to my AIS account to get the receipt then I went to the bank with the AIS receipt for the update. The mobile app was restored same day after 5PM.

I've been with Bangkok Bank and KBank for years. I've also used the same phone number for many years and that phone number is the number registered at both banks.I have never had any problems with anything connected to my phone number. BUT, according to KBank there are about 700,000 phone numbers activated sometime during 2022 (I don't remember the exact date) which are not registered to correct owners and does not match the number given to the bank. Many of those numbers doesn't even have a registered name. There are websites selling sim-cards which are pre-registered and that's not allowed.
Max *************
If you for example have a dtac sim-card, the name of the registered person doesn't show up anywhere in the app. You'll only see the phone number.
Stephen *********
Locked out of my app also for different reason. Account still open though. I don't see the point to it.

Update: went to the bank when it opened this morning. Gave them the required documentation. I was told my app would be back today there are 3 time slots 11am being first. My app is now back.

Yes Bangkok bank are freezing accounts and checking if all details match , if you are in Thailand you need to go into a branch update all details particularly phone & photo . I had to get a statement from my AIS with my address & passport number even though it’s been done before

Spelling is very important in Thailand. It's the same with converting money. The notes must be clean and free from any marks or stains.

Is it just the online app that is suspended? Can you still make an international deposit to the account or is everything frozen?
Kenny **********

I think it’s just the app. I’m in my way to the bank now so I’ll ask.
Kenny **********

It’s only the phone app that is suspended not the account. I asked. Also they say that they cannot do anything until the app is blocked then you have to present all your documents again and get photographed again then that all goes to head office and you will get unblocked. There are 3 times per day when they perform the unblocking.

Same issue, Kbank message on my phone app that that my account will be suspended 15 July. Went to the Hua Hin branch 12 July, confirmed my details and left. Yesterday my account suspended, now to visit the bank again 🤪
Chris *********
Same issues, April went through the motions to align sim card (AIS) to bank account (kasikorn) all was good, 30th June bang blocked out again and now going through the motions yet again to recover.

Tempted with starting fresh with a new bank account with SCB.
Brian *****
@Chris ********
don’t hold your breath, my AIS sim has been in my name for over 20 years, SCB sent a notification about a week ago saying I needed to ensure name matched with SIM. I called them and they said not to worry because everyone got the same notification and I was fine. Opened the app one hour ago and I’m locked out. 🤷🏻‍♂️

No issues with my Kasikorn so far.
Chris *********
@Brian ****
well I just spent an hour at kasikorn to update my phone number (2nd time since April, with same number) to then be told they need 7 days to confirm and approve the change before I can access my k-plus banking app. So im still locked out.
Brian *****
@Chris ********
hope I’m luckier with my Kasikorn then, as usual it’s a bit of a lottery

Happened to me also last week. Arrived literally a couple hours before the suspension. Went to my local branch the next day with my Thai gf to get my new number registered. I needed 2 visits as they needed to send the documentation to head office for processing. They told me to come back again the next week after I received a txt confirmation that it was being processed by head office. Returned this morning and had to sign a few more papers (a repeat of some I did I last week). The staff were really helpful and doing their best but it took a little bit of time which I felt sorry for other customers waiting in line. It eventually got resolved though I needed to wait until til the evening. Staff were great although their systems from head office seemed cumbersome. If it happens to anyone just be patient. It took me 2 15 min sessions in the bank and a visit to True internet provider where they got me to deposit 10 baht and get a receipt print out to take to the bank (after buying a new sim at the airport last week)

This would appear to be a widespread issue with BKK bank at the moment. Branches in Chiang Mai are currently inundated with expats seeking to unblock their accounts. I've had similar problems where my account was blocked and then unblocked and then my debit card blocked and then unblocked so I've spent hours at various BKK branches in CM sorting it out. The names on my registered SIM and my online account were identical so basically complete BS
Maksym ***********
Did update in March, in April, then we're blocked on 30 of June, spent one day in queries to update, was unblocked, in 10 minutes app crashed, updated all again, still got same error message, were asked to wait, after 5 days updated once more time. 🤷

Thailand is a bunch of monkeys, what else can you say. Shame the British didn't colonize it for a while, they could have taught them some useful things. But, you get what you pay for. You want to live cheap, you gotta deal with the nonsense. It's a shame really, such a beautiful country, with outstanding food. If they could just get rid of the corruption and establish some semblance of order, it would be awesome. This is just one man's opinion, please don't crucify me...

Best you stay in your own country then if Thailand is so bad. . I'm not surprised you're single. I just hope you're not a UK citizen. Embarrassing....

Let them be.

They live without God but keep worshipping a King who locked himself up in Germany with twenty prostitutes during the pandemic. And these Thais, completely lacking in ethical or political values, vent the frustrations of their underdeveloped country on the only people actually bringing value: us. White foreigners who come here, invest money, create jobs, and try to live decently.

They welcome us with smiles and bows, then torture us with petty tricks, systemic harassment, and bureaucratic traps meant to make us feel uncomfortable. They want to force us to live like them—in the same poverty, the same dysfunction, the same denial of dignity.

I lived there for nine months. Not as a tourist - real life. And I left. With the clear awareness that they don’t deserve our investment, our respect, or our presence. Honestly, I hope they get invaded by the Cambodians.

Maybe that would finally wake them up.

Because pretending to be “the Land of Smiles” while spitting in the face of those who actually support their economy is a disgrace no one should stay silent about.
