📣 VISA / BANK INFO IN THAILAND 🇹🇭💳

I’ve heard that some banks in Thailand have started closing accounts opened with the DTV (Digital Nomad Visa). 😟

I’m curious to know:

What has your experience been with this visa at different banks?

➡️ Is your account still active?

➡️ Which bank did you choose?

➡️ Has your bank contacted you about this?

Thanks everyone for your feedback — it could really help the community 🙏✨

TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent discussions among expats reveal concerns regarding the closure of bank accounts opened under the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand. Users shared their experiences with banks, noting that some accounts remain unaffected unless linked to specific nationalities, such as Russian or Chinese. While some expats reported successful account management and annual updates, others warned that banks might not notify account holders of issues until they attempt to make a transaction. Overall sentiments suggest that while some are satisfied with their banking experience, there is caution regarding account stability and a recommendation to consider international banking options.

I’m sure they are looking for dodgy accounts and probably quite a few questionable ones in Pattaya-Phuket-Hua Hin. Looks like they are starting to clean out the undesirable ones, quite a few criminals have been rounded up and soon to be deported

It’s a good thing for law abiding foreigners

Just use a reputable bank in your home country that has a good service for international banking. (low or no fees, atm fee reimbursement, etc.)… it is way better to not put your money into a country where you never know what will happen to your accoun and with an unstable political situation. there isnt even many benefits of having a bank account here…

it’s not a good idea to store money in a bank account btw. It’s better invested in crypto or stocks. For daily expenses while staying temporarily in Thailand it’s quite handy to have a bank account on which you can transfer a small amount of money. So you are able to pay rent or other expenses.

If someone prefers cash that’s fine, I prefer not to carry around a lot of banknotes or coins.

Anonymer Teilnehmer 654 1. thailand is pretty safe. never had an issue. i usualy take 30k per withdrawal from

ATM. (dont run around with that all day so)… 2. everything can be paid with cash… 3. if you really need online banking / QR scan then just use TrueMoney…. there is allways solutions.

Not sure what to do now but apparently a lot of it is media hype as they are only closing suspicious accounts down, mainly from Russia is what I’ve heard

@Dom *******
plenty of posts from non russians that got their account shut 😅

@Dany *******
that doesn’t contradict what I’ve heard tbh unless we see the full view of who’s accounts have been shut 👍

Opened my Bangkok Bank account on a student visa in 2018.

Still works, have done KYC every year since then.

According to another post I saw today, if you already have an account, you aren't likely to have an issue unless your are Russian or Chinese.

The bank will not notify you, and you will only find out that the account cannot transfer money out when you want to transfer money out! But you can transfer money in!

@Xu ****
I'm pretty sure they will send an SMS text message and/or email.

they also do calls. Based on branch staff I think

Basically, the account holder is asked to bring his passport and documents to the original branch where the account was opened to update the documents, keep the account or cancel the account.

I have actually experienced this...
