TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around the new Digital Nomad Visa in Thailand, focusing on requirements for documentation, particularly for freelancers and those with online businesses. Key points include the need for financial evidence, potential tax liabilities for long stays, and questions regarding the application process, especially for non-home country applications. Comments express uncertainty about maintaining financial statements, the permanence of the visa, confusion surrounding tax obligations, and the types of activities acceptable under this visa.
I used me driver's license. It's been a requirement for a few different visas, for awhile now. It's also the reason I feel comfortable applying for visas while in Thailand.

Does anyone have any idea how long the application process might take from start to receiving the visa?
Also does anyone have any confirmed information about applying when you are already in Thailand?
Do you know if i can apply at an embassy in a neighbouring country? Or do you have to apply in your home country, if you know where I can read this information please point me in the right direction 🙏
as I understand it you get 180 days per year for 5 years and can extend by 180 days only once, in regards to how long you have to leave for that's the remaining 176 days of the year, so as it's multi entry I think many will maybe spread the 180 days through the year in 60 day chunks and visit home country or cheap neighbour country for the time needed out of Thailand
Totally wrong. Please start to read the documents issued before posting. It’s 180 days stamped per entry. Entries are unlimited. And after completing the 180 days after each entry you have the choice to do a border bounce and repeat OR extend within country for 10k THB . Each time.
thanks I've been told by some people you can only extend once, then on the 2nd year it's only 180 days as can only extend the one time. It's quite confusing ans don't want to come on the wrong visa
Not true. 180 days out and back in as often as you like. Or optionally 180 days + another 180 days extension possible at every entry. Please read the extensive information and laws I shared in previous posts.
I cannot live life on ifs.. whatever happens, happens. If they happen to charge me tax, I'll pay. I have money, Im not a brokie. I rather not pay, and I'm assuming I won't have to. But again I cannot live in a what if world.
the reason it's 180 day per year is so that you do NOT become liable for paying tax in Thailand, although the whole tax details are a mess the 180 has been clear from the start
yep that's how I understand it, which is what I did say, I think many people forget that this is Thailand and they do move the goal posts a lot when something is new and also because to start they put out very unclear info people do read things how they want to which results in lots of misinformation and they don't like to be told what they said is wrong, end of the day anyone visiting Thailand is only ever a guest in the country and subject to any rule changes and people need to remember that....

So by applying for this visa, you are raising your hand and letting them know that you would be happy to fall into their tax system. Have fun with that.
and what happens if they scrap this whole thing after you openly admit that you are working within the country? You might have a hard time convincing them you're just here as a tourist after handing over all the evidence that you clearly are not.
we'll see. One department can say one thing, another acts differently. You guys can be the guinea pigs. They changed their tax code this year, so anyone staying in Thailand for 180 days this year is not being smart. Better to wait it out.

"Residents are defined as persons residing in Thailand at one or more times for an aggregate period of 180 days or more in any tax (calendar) year."

As soon as you hit 180 days, you're liable to pay tax. You'd be considered a tax resident of Thailand, and they would have all the evidence they need to prove it. They even let you extend for another 180 days so you can dig yourself a deeper grave lol

I’m an amateur bicycle racer so wonder if that is somehow part of the sports one?

If you show that you have a pulse, the government will let you in…at least until the swarms of low rent farangs come in and start acting poorly. I predict this visa won’t last long in this iteration.
Imagine getting a 5 year visa by proving you frequently attend music festivals. What do you need to prove, that you have ferry tickets to go to Koh Phangan for a bunch of Full Moon Parties? 😁
not in the category it is in which is not for digital nomad or work. It seems to be for attendees. A DJ would need a work visa.

Everything is still unclear. Is the financial statement only for the initial visa application or does ir have to be maintained in a thai account for 5 years?
What kind of portfolio is accepted for freelancers?
Is it possible to apply in a country that isn't your home country?

Does “Financial evidence” mean that this money is in the bank, or that you have evidence proving that you’re earning this annually? I assume the former, but maybe I’m wrong?
