You definitely need to do some research and get ready for a shitload of paperwork if you want to do this yourself. Still better than using an agent. I've got an income paper from the Dutch embassy instead of the 400k in the bank. Not all embassy do that though.

Not true. Overseas license is not accepted in Thailand. You need an IDP (international driving permit) which is valid for 3 months for most insurance agencies. But we already had this conversation so you might want to try Google.
