I totally agree. $1500 is barely enough and if he is over 65 health insurance will be a real problem. Basically he needs $500,000 to self insure if he has a sudden heart attack or stroke. If he develops a chronic condition he can return to the USA as long as he has kept his Medicare parts A and B.

I had heard that if you apply outside Thailand you can provide verification of income via a bank statement. Is that correct? The downside is that you have to provide proof of health insurance and insurance at our age is expensive and not worth the paper it’s printed on.

How do you pick up the money in Thailand when using Wise? Don’t you need a bank account?

Gosh, Rob, I am so sorry to hear about your health problems and the issues with Pacific Cross. I hope that your treatment goes well and that you manage to get reimbursed by PC. Given your experience, I will steer clear of them. Do you know if there are any reputable health insurance companies in Thailand? I am planning to retire to Hua Hin in late October and hope to meet expats. Cheers, Colin

Why? I had heard good things about them and am considering signing up with them. Have you had problems?

Follow up questions: Is it better to apply in the USA or in Thailand. I have heard that you don’t need the 800k if applying in the US, just guaranteed income such as SS. If applying in Thailand, I have heard that you don’t need health insurance. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks.
