My wife and I are also retiring over to Thailand and we have been informed that if one goes as a dependent then only 800k required. However, if something happened to the main visa holder that results in death then the person on the dependancy would be deported. Also told only one person could go over as the main holder for 3 months and the other would have to stay at home for this duration. This is why we are going down the route of both of us having our own visa’s.

I use mine every time we visit without issue
