Hi, retiring to Thailand with my wife on the 17th Feb and will be in BKK for the initial 6 months then hoping to move to Hua Hin. My question is if we open bank accounts in BKK is it just a simple address change for Hua Hin as it is here in Ireland when moving or do we need to open new accounts in Hua Hin? Apologies if this has been asked before.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When moving from Bangkok to Hua Hin, you generally cannot just change the address on your existing bank account. Each bank branch in Thailand operates independently, and it is recommended to open a new account in Hua Hin. Some users have had experiences where they updated their address at their Bangkok bank, but this may not be the norm and could cause complications with visa documentation. It’s advisable to check with the specific bank for their policies.

I opened up a Bangkok bank account in Bangkok 2 years ago and just finished doing my initial retirement visa in pattaya and had zero problems

Why don’t you ask the bank? 555

Agreed. Whatever answer he gets from one bank branch will be worthless at another bankbranch of even the same bank. It’s Thailand rules.

If you close one account to open another you may have problems with your visa as you will be messing about with the 800k.

I moved provinces and simply changed address at the Bkk bank.

I subsequently extended my stay for a further year and the bank issued the required documents in 10 minutes.

If you use the cardless withdrawal method to get cash from ATM, you do not pay charges wherever you are.

@Stuart **********
are you saying you changed your home branch? What’s the purpose of changing your address?
Stuart ***********
@John *******
simply to keep the bank up to date with my address in case they decide to post something to me. I can't remember if the documents they produce for immigration show you live in the province.
Wylie *******
Unfortunately no. Despite having internet and I'm sure being capable, none of the banks work that way here.

Banks here work differently. If you have an account in Bangkok you generally can’t transfer that to HH. You’d need to open a new account in HH and transfer the funds from your other account.

Each branch is their own “fiefdom”. Even though they are the same bank each branch has different rules and requirements. For some transactions they will ask you to visit your actual branch to do xxxx. Regardless that you may be 100s of miles away from where you are now.

You can't just change your address. You will always be connected to your "home branch" in Bangkok. After moving to HH I recommend to open a new account there.
