The bank to bank fee was mistaken, ATM ones weren't, I've commented below thanks. Visa do add a percent or two, Wise charge another 1% for ATM withdrawals after £200 a month, and I was also trying to avoid the 220baht charge.

Thank you great to have a contingency. At £10,000 Wise is 700 Baht better (0.17%).

This is the email from Wise I was going by on the bank to bank fees, apologies, I misread it, the 2% is for "using your card to" send money. These come in on 3rd Jan but only for transfers using a card. Worth noting that ATM withdrawals are only free up to £200 a month.

But even then they use the Visa rate, which includes a 1-2% margin. There website gives you the margin they charge on any given day:
************************************************************************************

I was also given a rate very close to the Visa rate, so including a percent or two, plus £1.20 fee, when I transferred £83 into Siam bank.

I was also referring to the 220 Baht fees the ATMs charge. I think all do without exception?

Do compare the rate you get though on a particular day - I believe Moneygram adds to the rate, which is sneaky. Wise has a page that tells you it's amount vs Moneygram.

I recommend you make a list of some essentials, then search on the internet to find the cost of buying them once you're there, looking at ecommerce sites and second hand selling sites such as local ebay, if it operates there, facebook marketplace, etc. Online is often the cheapest way to buy. If you can afford the up front cost of buying again there, then when you leave the country, you will get a little over half of that money back by selling it again second hand. You may get all your money back on anything bought second hand.

Also consider the complexities of international shipping and the distraction that will be, and that shipping can take months.

After doing that I haven't yet concluded that it is worthwhile. Instead I budget for some excess luggage. (You might be able to persuade your employer to buy tickets with an airline that gives you lots of luggage allowance.) With three people's allowances you'll be able to bring many treasured possessions, but for most airlines a bike would cost extra. But bikes are pretty cheap in Europe and widely available second hand, from budget bikes to extremely advanced bikes.

Huge congratulations on finding this opportunity!

Maybe they let you off 4 times, but when you did it a 5th time booking the Etihad a day late you deserved a fine? I'd call that friendly but eventually firm.

There are some differences. For example the form of IDP Thailand accepts is not valid for three years. Might get you through a check with an uninformed official or rental agency though I guess.
