Is it advisable to overstay my tourist visa in Thailand for just 2 days?

ORIGINAL POSTER
Hey guys just a quick question. I got stamped in on a tourist visa until 29th Feb but my flight out is on 2nd march. Since it’s only 2 days is it possible to avoid going to immigration and extending for another 30 days? Is paying for 2 days over stay a bad idea? Any tips would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus in the community is that it is inadvisable to overstay even for a couple of days due to potential legal and personal consequences. Users strongly recommend applying for a visa extension, which costs 1,900 baht, rather than risking an overstay, which can lead to fines and complications in future travels to Thailand. It is generally easier and safer to extend the visa than to deal with an overstay, even if it results in a minor fine at the airport.

If you're never going back to Thailand then save 900 baht! But overstays cause major problems down the line

You made a mistake, so now you will have to correct it, by making a extension at the Immigration.

Arrive at immigration before they open. It’s a giant DMV from He$$. Get in line after filling out the paper. They check your answers. They give you a plastic number, you wait just outside for your number to be called and announced on a board. Usually 5 at a time. You file into a room take a window, hand your approved paperwork and have the 1900 baht in hand. They might ask simple questions. But they collect the money, you move out to the waiting area, eventually after 15 minutes the girl with the microphone comes out and at another table bringing your approved and newly stamped passport and you leave. If you’re late to immigration expect at noon the entire area is stopped for lunch, you escalator down stairs to the mall and eat lunch. Expect total time at 3 to 4 hours.

During Covid we were 5 days late. Locked in a mandatory hospital. We paid $6000 baht and left for Tokyo.

Yes, you can overstay a few days without much concern! I would rather pay a 2 or 3 day fine than visit immigration or make a border run. One would not make a habit of overstaying, but you realize that.

Why would anyone with half a brain risk having problems, rather than paying for an extension to avoid problems. After all, it doesn't break the bank to get the extension. People trying to skirt the system cause the problems for those of us that live here and obey the laws of the land.

Honestly man go visit hochi Minh 3 days , or Hanoi 3 days it s better than thailand , the food is great , the city are beautiful , you will come back with visa on arrival,

If you like thailand you will like more vietnam

there's no way Hanoi is any better than any village in the middle of nowhere. Thailand is much better than Vietnam, even though I like it there. In Thailand the variety of products, attitude of people, and things to do are greater

And honestly Hanoi is just boring, full of rude people, and dirty. IMO only Da Nang, Sapa, Hoi An, Hue are worth visiting. More corruption there as well and although the Vietnamese are really friendly, many A-holes too, always trying to get the upper hand on you and they don't know personal space and manners

You have 2 possibilities:

1. Extend your visa for another 30 days.

2. You change your flight to 29th.

An Overstay can have negative impact on your coming travels to Thailand. Never do that.

😃 Dear Deniz

Deniz Saritel -" You have 2 possibilities:

1. Extend your visa for another 30 days.”

*** note to self: a visa cannot get extended. Only a stay permit can get extended. And btw he doesn’t have a visa, he entered visa exempt

"2. You change your flight to 29th"

*** note to self: He is flying out according to his ticket on Feb. 29th. If he needs to change anything, then that would be a change to March 2nd.

Honestly Deniz, what do you smoke? 😎

First of all , don't get rude and stay calm and discuss things and don't look down to people.

I just used his own words to make it clear that he can extent his 30 stay( it is called a Visa on arrival) and it is a visa if you haven't known that yet until now. The only thing is that you don't need to go to Thai embassy for that because for 30 days you get a visa on arrival.

And getting another 30 days stay is called extension too. Anything you do to stay more than you just have is an extension.

I recommended him those two ways because I just wanted to prevent him from having trouble with his next travels. As we all know an Overstay can have negative impact on his plans to get visa in future.

I just mentioned a change of flight as a possibility. But it is up to him he can pay overstay fees and have a problem in future or he can pay either for an extension 1900 Baht or for a flight change and so have a clean record for the future.

He wrote:

.... I got stamped in on a tourist visa until 29th Feb but my flight out is on 2nd march. ...

... to avoid going to immigration and extending for another 30 days? Is paying for 2 days over stay a bad idea? ....

Getting an overstay instead of paying for the extension saves you a grand total of 900 Baht. (1000B for 2 days overstay, 1,900 for the extension).

The risks Brandon outlined above just don't match up with the saving. Just get the extension.

Also, you can go in any time before 29th, as the extension is added to your existing stay (as opposed to the day you went in), so you don't actually lose any days by going in early.

At the airport it self it’s no big deal. They will take you aside and recommend that you’ll get a proper visa according to your stay next time and you pay 1000 thb in cash.

You should never go on overstay if you can avoid it.

Although it's unlikely with only 2 days, if you have any interaction with the police (random traffic checkpoint, etc) while you're even on one day overstay, you can be arrested, taken to deportation jail, and held there until your flight. At which point you'll be banned from Thailand for 5 years.

If you get to the airport then you'll pay 1000 baht fine (500 per day) and receive an overstay stamp in your passport. An overstay stamp could potentially affect your ability to purchase a visa to another country or enter another country or Thailand in the future.

Brandon Thurkettle one isn't banned for 5 years until they've overstayed 3 years if not caught by police, and leave voluntarily. 1 day to 1 year o/s if caught by police gets a 5 year reentry ban.

it 5 years for 1 day if you're CAUGHT by police and detained. If you leave via immigration without getting caught by police you get fined ฿500 per day with no detention. All this is common knowledge, as are ways to avoid having to worry about it.

if you're caught by the police even 1 day overstay it's an instant 5 year ban. The other bans are if you turn yourself in at the airport.
