TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is concerned about their expiring tourist visa in Thailand just before their flight to Vietnam. Community members suggest different options: going to immigration to apply for an extension (either for 30 days or a possible 7-day extension if previously extended), or paying a fine of 500 THB per day for overstaying at the airport. There are warnings about the consequences of overstaying even by a few days, including potential detention and fines, though some users argue that minor overstays are often overlooked. The conversation highlights the differing opinions on overstaying and the related risks.

Hi everyone.

How do you do thailand pass for the whole family? can it be done by one person submitting documents for the whole? Thankyou

One day is usually waived

Visa over stay

Overstaying your date in your passport is breaking the law.

Many times on here people ask is it ok to overstay - 1, 2, 5 days etc. The fine at the immigration exit desk is 500 baht per day of overstay. Some immigration officers will waive the fine if it is only 1 day, but you’ll still get a red stamp in your passport.

HoweVer if you are stopped inside the country for any reason - like at a police check point - even on your way to airport or border crossing then be prepared for a whole lot of trouble.

The police may arrest you as you have broken the law. If they do you’ll be fined in court and then sent to the nearest Immigration Detention Centre, where you will be kept until you buy a one way ticket back to your home country. If you don’t have the funds for that you will be kept there until you find some means of raising those funds. Once you have your ticket, you will be deported and blacklisted from entering the country for up to 5 years.

Sounds dramatic but it sometimes happens. 500 baht a day sounds cheaper than 1900 baht at a local immigration office but in the overall scheme of things it is never wise to overstay.

No, the police wont arrest you for overstaying for a few days. You said it sometimes happens, which is factually incorrect. It very rarely happen, and when it does its someone doing more illegal stuff on the side who get ratted out by someone else.

I'm not sure if you have already used your visa extension but if you don't want absolutely any trouble your best option is probably to go to immigration, apply for a visa extension:

- if it is denied because you have already extended once then you'll get a 7 day extension which will allow you to leave the country on the 4th

- if you haven't extended yet, you'll get a 30 day extension.

That will cost you 1900thb in both cases.

Overstaying is not recommended, and it also affects you for future visa applications in other countries. However, you can do it, you'll have to pay 500 bath per day and you'll get into the very unlikely possibility of being detained for overstaying. Something that never happens but doesn't mean it can't happen.

@Will *****
This is factually incorrect. You dont get denied a visa because you overstayed for a few days. Stop making shit up to scare newcomers.

thanks for clarifying, as far as I see and according to your comments, what I've said is right. It "affects" you (not to the point to be denied, which is something I don't know but to the point of having to state it on your visa applications to other countries).

And right, the option of being deported for a few days is extremely unlikely, but it is again something I already said.

I really don't see the problem on my comment.

Thanks for your clarification in any case, it might help people which is what this group is for. 😉

Yes, I understand, I just felt that your comment was too dramatic. If we read it like it is "OVERSTAYING is not recommended, and it also affects you for future visa applications in other countries.", it sound very dramatic. And then, you even added to the drama by saying that "you must hope that the cops wont bang at your door", im paraphrasing, but it really sounded overly-dramatic given the low risk of any of that happening. Then you have people reading your post that will re-use your sentences to "help others" when they have similar questions. Sometimes, we are their last resort because they get conflicted info everywhere else.

alright, I'll edit that part 😉

hi will sent you a pm i asked questions haha i am sorry

@Maxim **********
can you specify where did I say that? I never said you get denied a visa for overstaying some days.

I've already explained my experience when applying for a W&H visa in Australia and how my unprovoked visa overstay in Thailand affected it.

@Will *****
I am not doubting what happened to you, but its important to remain objective while giving advice. Because newb will then spread non-sense while answering other people (like Brian below, and his idiotic google copy/paste). A lot of people read such thread and will then give advice to other based on what they read from you or others. Bad info can pass around all the time.

@Maxim **********
I definitely tried to stay as objective as possible. I gave the 2 legal pathways to not overtaying and recommended not to overstay. At the same time, I clarified that overstaying was a possibility with risks (few, but risks).
Maxim ***********
@Will *****
You said: "and it also affects you for future visa applications in other countries.", which imply potential rejection (if not, what is the wording "affects" for?). All of that is false. The only moment where it "could" affect you is upon entering Thailand, which there is no report of such issue. If one person had a power-trip in Australia doesn't mean that he was in the right or that you could have been rejected. It's simply one person that doesn't know how to do his job. It's a rare anecdotal evidence. Just like you can get into a plane crash, but it's also very rare. Rare occurrence should not be treated as "potential affects", because its very unlikely. Just like its very unlikely that ull get a police visit after overstaying for a few days. It "can" happen, but the likelihood is on the same level as dying from taking the plane.

there is no problem now or in the future and no repercussions in overstaying for 3 days. With respect going to immigration paying more is not essential in this instance of only 2-3 days. To spending a lot of time in travel and at immigration is not necessary in this instance for more than 3-7 days maybe this why they have an overstay payment office at the airport . Friends who come here often have done this. As said different if contemplating a longer time

@R**
I understand your point, but I've been in this situation and I've been pushed by inmigration to overstay although I had everything ready. It wasn't funny and when applying for a visa in Australia I had to say that I had overtayed for 1 day due to Thai immigration asking me for a letter on the last day although I had asked before for all the required documents. It didn't affect me that's right, I got my australian viaa pproved without issues but it wasn't funny that due to their dirty way to make 500 bath extra out of me I had to get myself explained at australian immigration.

Aussie immigration a pain unfriendly over bearing . Last time went through used the gates but didn’t work requested assistance. Told get in that queue “ nothing else said, “hey this is an oz passport “. When i got to an officer who was rude to say the best asked if i had filled out an atd. Yes online and acknowledgement received. “ do you have a copy “ yes here it is. Passport slapped back on the desk nothing else said so couldn’t resist said i thought we paid taxes to make sure the right systems are in place. Obnoxious treatment of a senior citizen

Sure they, will. Not sure how the covid visas are right now but as I've heard if you bring an embassy letter they can give you another one. In any case, if denied you get 7 days.
