Can I extend my 60-day visa in Thailand by paying a penalty for overstaying?

Hi! I'm a Canadian coming to Thailand for a total of 93 days (booked it before learning of the 90 day thing). I'll be entering with a 60 day Visa and was thinking I'll have to leave the country for at least a few days. But someone suggested I just get the 30day extension and then play dumb when I leave and pay the 500baht/day (1500 baht) penalty. Any comments on the feasibility of doing this? I am required to put the number of days I'm staying on my 60 day visa application so I am uneasy about playing dumb but maybe being overly paranoid? Thanks for any advice!!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to stay in Thailand for 93 days with a 60-day tourist visa. They are considering a 30-day extension but are also contemplating whether to overstay and pay a daily penalty upon departure. Community comments suggest that obtaining a 30-day extension at an immigration office is feasible and recommend traveling to a neighboring country to re-enter Thailand for additional time. However, most advise against overstaying, even for a few days, to avoid complications in future travels.

60 days on tourist visa, add another 30 days at immigration for 1.900 THB and add another 7 days at immigration, again for 1.900 THB. Then you won't have problems visiting the country again some day.

Or you could visit a neighbouring country while you are here. Return flight to HCMC is usually around 2-3.000 THB and then you get to see something else as well.

It is 30 days now only at land borders(G7 etc). Never a good idea to overtsay.

As a visitor it is never a good idea to intentionally overstay a visa and be stamped in your passport.

Yeah whatever. Don't like to encourage what is technically illegal. But I'm surely not going to be fear-mongering it, as you are. Mostly what you say is rubbish anyhow.

There are a lot of police checks these days. There is a remote chance of being busted and jailed in IDC before you get to the airport. An overstay remains on your permanent record. If you get a stamp in your passport other countries you may visit (example Japan) or apply for a visa to might not like that. Overstaying is never a good idea.

She said a 30 day extension, Adam, which of course would be available to her after lodging an application at any Thai Immigration office (can be lodged anytime up to 30 days before expiry date). Secondly, overstaying a few days, whilst technically illegal, is quite common and perfectly acceptable assuming you're comfortable paying the fee when leaving the kingdom.

15 days changed into 30 days on 31 Dec 2016.

For G7 countries like the OPs it had already changed to 30 days in November of 2013.

I thought it was 15 day visa exempt on a land border crossing.

Do you already have the 60 day single entry tourist visa? If not, apply for the 6 month multi entry tourist visa which will give you 60 days per entry. Otherwise, enter on SETV for 60 days and then plan a

day trip to another country and return on exempt entry (free) to get you 30 days more.

Good plan. Lots of great places to explore that are so close... Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Malaka Malaysia, Bali, Luang Prabang Laos, Ho Chi Min Vietnam (sidenote, out of all of those... only Malaysia and Bali are free visas). Check out here for some cheap flights:

Yes, I don't plan to do a 30 day extension rather just leave the country for a few days at least at end of 60 days and get the 30day visa exempt
Mark *******
Then do as Robert said... enter on 60 day SETV, extend for 30 days at immigration (1900 baht) and then again near the end apply for extension and they will deny it but give you 7 days (1900 baht).

Reason I recommend the METV is that you can easily spend half the day at immigration for each extension and you will be spending 4800 baht on visa and extensions. With the METV, you enter for 60 days and then just take a 'border run' (step over the border stamp out, stamp in) to start another 60 days.

Now.....you mention you're staying in Koh Phangan? Is that for the entire trip? Because extensions and/or visa runs are going to be a pain in the butt as there is no immigration office on the island. You would have to go to Koh Samui each time.

Hi
@Mark ******
, I don't plan to do multiple entries. I was trying to find out if there was a way of not having to leave at all:-)

Also, will they question me when I arrive about a plan for leaving the country before 60days?

@Jenny *******
hard cash in either baht or the equivalent in another currency [Dollars, Canadian Dollars, etc.]...Just FYI there are no ATM's on the Plane Side of the Airports...

Ok, good to know...thanks very much!!
Jeremy ********
they shouldn't...but some people are being asked to show 20,000THB when they arrive...odds are low but it can happen it depends on the individual Immigration Officer
Robert *******
First 60 days with the Visa, than 30 days Extension of Stay at Immigration office, than just go to a close by border stamp out, stamp in other country, turn around stamp out, stamp in Thailand for another 30 days Visa Exempt Entry or as Jeremy said apply for another extension and get the 7 days stamp. Being on overstay even for few days is not recommended.

Thanks Jeremy!! Yes, I was thinking I'll do a small trip from Koh Phangan. What is HCMC?
Jeremy ********
Ho Chi Minh City [Saigon] Vietnam...super cheap to stay there as well...1.5 hour flight from BKK
Jeremy ********
after you pay for the 30-day extension at the end of your 60 days you can pay another 1,900 THB for a 7-day extension this will put your mind at ease...or you can Fly out/In, or drive out/in to another destination and stay a few days in that destination to get you to the 30-day rule for when you depart....Angkor Wat in Cambodia is a good 3-5 day minication, KL is nice for a few days, Bali as well, HCMC is nice and cheap, HK or Macau, as well as Singapore, there are many low-cost airlines in Thailand....or pay the 500THB overstay and do not get in any trouble while you are outside the visa requirements....
