What kind of insurance is needed for a DTV extension in Thailand?

Jan 3, 2025
The following answer just came in from my local Immigration Office in regards of my DTV extension this month. Not sure what kind of insurance they are talking about. Anyone got an idea? I will ask them again…

„We would like to inform you about your DTV Extension. Yes, we need your new financial proof in English and your insurance (it must cover a whole period of your stay). You have to prepare all the documents as same as you prepared for the Thai Embassy when you first apply for DTV but all in English. You can contact us after the middle of January as your visa will expire in February.“

This also answers the speculations once more, if or if not you need all the documents and fresh proof again. Yes you do.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The update from the local Immigration Office regarding the DTV visa extension indicates that applicants need to provide new financial proof in English and insurance that covers the entire duration of their stay. This reflects a need for renewed documentation similar to that submitted for the initial visa application. The community expresses confusion about what specific type of insurance is required, with some suggesting that it might be mistakenly referenced, and others advocating for simply exiting and re-entering Thailand instead of going through the extension process.

Using terminology like "your visa will expire in February" makes this whole communication suspect.

Because they don’t really want you doing extensions, they want you to even come back. That was the whole point of the visa.

Each country seems to have different actual requirements, yet,..... people still post anon here without any indication of what country theyre from. 🤔🤷

There needs to be some "Anon" post rules...

Boat insurance. It is becoming popular for people on DTV's to buy boats and take up fishing so now they require all to purchase boat insurance

why? the extension is IF you want to stay longer than 6 months, without leaving the country. Anything else, you'd be doing more work, and possibly spending more.

yeah many people i know stay away from getting the marriage visa as many offices have some crazy requirements every year. getting the DTV is just one fairly simple online process. if you have the 4 documents required then its 10mins of effort and you are good for 5 years with a few border runs.

I guess most hobbyist visa experts never will graps the small differences of English language terminology applied to "staying in Thailand" - I wonder how they can do their "remote jobs" successfully? I mean if I would make the same mistakes about something as simple as this in my computer science jobs: I would be instantly out of my job.

ok, so that would mean the extension is only for 30 days. If that's the case, i stand by my original comment/question: a border bounce gets you an extra 180 days Vs a 30 day extension of stay for 1900, so why bother with the extension?

the original document never stated 10k for the extension. it stated no costs for the extension. but it was later officialy added to be 1900 baht… there is also Thai Immigration Bureau Order No.

which specifies some things for the extension. and there is the official DTV regulations in the royal gazette.

Do a BORDER BOUNCE to get the new 180 days with the DTV Visa. AVOID getting the DTV extension of stay inside Thailand.

i can do a border run, sure… but i want to explore all options and learn about the process and share the experience in this group. idk why people are so reluctant to understand. if i can get one extension done and know the process then it will be easier down the road. in Krabi the extension would take me probably 1.5 hours from leaving the house to returning to it. so why not exploring our options???

Anonymous participant can you edit your post to show where your "local" immigration office is? If immigration follows the usual trend, every office will have small quirks and requirements that others won't... like CNX requiring a TM30 for extensions when others don't. I totally agree that it's helpful to share info and appreciate you sharing the experience. There will soon be a flurry of these posts and knowing what office wants what is also helpful.

Anonymous participant Insurance is not really a mistake. It is only not "required by visa acquiring" processes.

As a resident of Thailand, regardless of Visa type or not visa: you are required to have health insurance. It was always the case. It is just not a requirement for "most visa extensions". So you are basically never asked for proof of insurance. I think there is only one Non O, where it is a requirement for extension.

You are not required to have health insurance to live in Thailand. The non-O doesn't require insurance on renewal. The non-oa has an insurance requirement, and perhaps others, I'm not sure.

I just read up on it. There are several visa types that require insurance. And there are many situations that do not legally require health insurance if going to Thailand. If you can point to a law that says different, I'm happy to correct myself.

The visa type has nothing to do with it. As I explained several posts above already.

Everyone living long time in Thailand is required to have a health insurance. Does not matter if Thai, ASEAN or western country.

This is not a third world country.

The only weak point at the moment is: they enforce the requirement only for one or two visa types.

Hence your misconceptions.

Hint: Immigration law is not the same as Visa rules. There is a 130 Paragraph law book about immigration.
