What are the latest rumors about Thailand's long-stay visa requirements?
Why? So many rumours and stuff even in seemingly legit news outlets?? It's about a long(er) VISA and could seriously impact lives negatively ;*()

Seeing as most offices only allow you to apply for an extension when you have 30 days or less left on your current entry stamp that means not ONE SINGLE PERSON who has a DTV has gone for an extension yet. 🙁
NO ONE knows what the actual requirements will be, or really even what the cost will be (some say normal 1900baht, some say 10K)

Thailand did the "Digital Nomad" visa kind of last but they did the Best and easiest kicking everyone out of the park. I tried Croatian, Spanish, Malaysian, Japanese, Mexico, Columbian plus 20 others and everyone bite the dust with DTV. If people find this hard, Try Croatian Visa first to start in Europe, minimum wait time six months and tons of paper work, Spanish even harder.

Bangkok Post is western outlet, they are backed by jealous expats who are unnecessary creating troubles for DTV visa as they are on expensive visa and cannot digest that DTV is far more simpler, being coming to Thailand for over 2.5 decades working from home back in the day when it was not even called "Work from Home" or "Digital Nomad" just freelancing and NEVER EVER I saw a Single THAI who cared for what Visa I was on but plenty of "foreigners" interested in what visa I was on. Even Thai immigration have happy go lucky attitude unless one created trouble here but the western news outlet seems to be creating trouble for DTV holders out of nothing, they are forcing immigration to create more strict rules for DTV, let it slide, no one would care.

This is a global move to relax tourism, Thailand are being smart, I don't agree with the soft side, but a alot of other countries are attracting digital nomads or freelancers who can prove income. Spain are at the forefront in the EU so why not. Yes it's being abused, but it was before. That's not the point, the visa is a positive and good move, it's just a little too relaxed. Some things need to tighten, but that's across the board tbh.

As long as you go on holiday occasionally, you will get a 6-month entry stamp each time upon your return so no need for extensions - I can't imagine many expats never go away, except perhaps elderly retirees who would be better off with a retirement visa.

I think that's unlikely given the effort that would be involved with re-training all the border officers to assess what qualifies as ongoing for each of the many DTV options, but indeed anything could happen over the next 5 yearsGreg ********

To extend a non-O, you must again show that you meet the requirements, including financial. I would assume the same with extending the DTV, in the country. But with Thailand, you never know :-)

yeah, because they are jealous as they are on expensive visa, I been coming to Thailand for over 2.5 decades, never ever I imagined that expats from west would be as jealous as others, they are creating unnecessary trouble as Bangkok post is owned by expats, its a foreign news outlet, I got the DTV visa, just go to Jakarta which is the easiest now, do it before eVisa takes over, just create a profile using chatGPT detailing your work 4-5 pages, get 500k Bank account statement , submit certificate etc, give as much paper as you could or you can get Muay Thai course for around 30k THB and you would get it, DO NOT WATCH tiktok, youtube, news for DTV, your BRAIN cells will go down with confusion. Even youtube videos are annoying, you click to find out: “How do I get the DTV” and they always do the same thing. Just read out what is on the embassy’s website and give almost no actual advice. So have hired a VA full time to sift through all of it for me. Then am just adding filters so I can search it.

Why is it so hard to believe that the floodgates have been opened? They need the people! Bangkok was the most visited city on the planet pre-covid. I guess they are not giving up this position easily?! Yes, they are stamping 5 year visas to anyone with 500k in the bank who has some interest in Thailand. This is their plan! This increases tourism numbers, the average length of stay, spending, and, once Thailand is number one again, prestige as well! I wish every country did the same. They're making it easy because there are so many unoccupied condo units nationwide. It's a big problem. The DTV is just a smokescreen to get people into those units. That's why the DTV barrier to entry is low. The Thai government do not care what your reason is, although they have to at least make it look half legitimate.

There is allready being made moves in that direction, some get another visa ie. medical, if that visa covers the period they need to be in Thailand.

There has been speculation that would be the case but many poured scorn on the idea. The initial DTV is a MFA Visa - extensions and re-entry are down to the Royal Thai Immigration Police - two very different entities. Anyway - as of now it is all speculation and guesswork - We will know in due time.

oh God, OK. Well, good to know. The whole system in Thailand is based on everything being "on a whim" really. That's my impression anyway. If you have put down roots here, I would prefer to have as much security as possible. I have a Thai Privilege visa (when it was called Elite and wasn't quite as expensive as it is today). But it runs out at the beginning of 2026 so I am already on the lookout for something else. In the meantime, I have married a Thai, so I could get a visa based on marriage. That was the usual requirement for those at language schools. A guy I know of went kn a lads trip and was stopped from re-entering at BKK. He was questioned in Thai and could not answer despite being on ED for almost 3 years. He had to fly to Cambodia, apply for Tourist Visa. I know a couple of guys it happened to. Travelled while on ED Visa. Questioned about their progress kn the Thai Language course ie none. Refused entry on the ED and it was cancelled. Riles and the whims of whoever is in charge can change overnight. When "Big Joke" became head of immigration the Volunteer Visa disappeared almost overnight. Went straight to the previous PM who wanted economic growth and tourism was a main plank of that. I know it's an unpopular opinion here, but honestly, would probably be a good idea if they did do that. Kind of stupid to allow people with a single doctors appointment or taking a week long cooking class access to your country for 5 years.

tis a fair point. My case - my single doctors appointment from BIH, led to 1.5million baht in medical fees. Every penny well spent. Thats just in the first 8 weeks of being here. My recovery from surgeries, add about 35k per appt.
Maybe I’m the outlier. someone actually going thru with the treatment. But BIH was busy.
Not sure what more could have been provided by BIH though, til they met me, I was just some dude on email.
But they’ve given me my life back now and I can recover in a warmer climate.

That means you are remote worker, and DTV makes sense for people like you.But for a 3 months training or medical treatment giving a 5 year visa just does not make any sense.
People who really are working remote, like you and me are normally using this option for getting DTV.
But a lot of others here just want the visa because they want to stay in Thailand without valid reason to get one of the existing visa, and try to find a way to qualify for DTV, because it is very easy at the moment.
That makes the chances are high those people will take jobs from Thai.

When COVID happened and it was shut down a lot of people lost jobs. They are happy the foreign people is back.

The Philippines is very popular as well. However, Thailand, being more developed and sharing borders with 4 countries is more accessible and hence, somewhat more popular. I am still considering it. An ex-colleague wants to set up a company and we were looking at the BOI Smart "S" Startup Visa. However if we do not do any business in Thailand we could use the DTV. I would prefer the company to be set up in Singapore for legal (Contract law and ownership) and financial reasons.
