ORIGINAL POSTERA quick one: Is insurance essential to be eligible for the DTV? I've always been the type to keep money squirrelled away for medical emergencies after crap experiences with insurance companies in the past.

I don't think it's actually a requirement, although I'd say it probably should be? As I'm not aware of any tourist travel insurance which would come close to covering that amount of time.
