I am not on overstay, and depart in a couple weeks.
I was just wondering, what happens at the automated departure gates for some on overstay.
Do they stay closed and how is the fine paid ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When departing Thailand, if you are on overstay, the automated gates will remain closed, preventing your exit. Instead, you will be directed to a manned immigration desk where a staff member will assist you with paying the overstay fine. While there may be some delays, especially if the overstay is only for a few days, it is advisable to maintain a clear immigration record for future visits.
It will reject you when you attempt to scan your passport and you'll get directed to a booth with an IO in

In the case of an overstay, gates will remain closed and youβll be directed to an IO. No biggie for overstay really, if few days - but as you said you donβt plan to overstay. Best to keep clear immigration record for future entries etc. π

Lights flash and 2 arms with boxing gloves come out and box you. Then gloves come off and payment machine comes out!ππ
you forget the exit lanes will be shut down in a gridlock, there will be a loud alarm blaring and everywhere, orange lights will begin to flash. Two armed security guards will approach Mister
and taser him into obscurity immediately, before they ask any questions. Taser now, ask questions later, that was their training motto regarding overstayers. (irony offπ)

Give it a try - it might be malfunctioning! Otherwise you'll be directed to a manual gate for overstay fine processing. No big deal if it's only a few days
