TLDR : Answer Summary
Many users assert that a 3-day overstay in Thailand typically results in a fine without major repercussions for future visits. While the general consensus suggests that paying a fine (around 1,500 baht for 3 days) upon departure is standard procedure, concerns arise about potential implications for future entries into Thailand, especially if caught by law enforcement during the overstay. Some participants mention anecdotal evidence where exceeding the allotted stay could have more severe consequences, particularly with other countries' immigration authorities. A few recommend applying for an extension or proactively addressing the issue with immigration to avoid complications. Overall, the responses indicate a range of opinions, with some emphasizing caution and compliance with legal requirements.

Anyone on here been on overstay and been banned ?
Tom *********
The general rule is one day overstay is a freebe. Two days will get an inquiry as to why. 3 days will raise an eyebrow and a good reason will be required. A week overstay will crank up the machine. The penalties are clearly laid out on your countries Thai embassy website.

500 Baht per day fine at the airport. We were 5 days late (because of Covid hospital wouldn’t release us) and paid 6,000 baht leaving for Tokyo. They give you a red departure stamp.
Thats when a visa service comes in handy. Bumrungrad International in BKK has one in premises. Depending on the date you entered you should have been covid exempt. I legally stayed 10 months on a 6 month multi-entry tourist visa in 2020.

21 days overstayed one and more times, always back to Thailand without any problem

Kontakt immigrasjon når du ankommer, og fortell at du har tre dager overstay, betal 500 baht pr dag, og alt ordner seg. Gjorde dette selv for noen år tilbake.

If you get into trouble at the airport, just tell the immigration officer, that someone at FB told you that it would not be a problem. I’m sure the officer will understand 😉

If you apply for an elite visa it can be a problem. They can reject you even for one day. They stating that if you have overstay, don’t apply for the elite visa.
correct. If you got an overstay remark in their central computer, you can't apply for an ELITe visa anymore, and also you can't apply for a "change of visa type" any more

I had one day overstay last week was fine did not even charge me
Phillip ********
If it was the first time, no. They will just charge you 500 baht per day. After the second time you could get a problem with some types of long term visa in the future.

In Singapore if you overstay by a day, they treat you like your a criminal, but that's Singapore for you.

Three day overstay will cost you 1,500 baht. Visa extension will cost you 400 baht more. Not worth the hassle, just get an extension.
Steve ******
As someone has mentioned, why not abide by their rules. We would be complaining here about overstayed.

Not if you don't have your passport checked at some police stop and if it's your only overstay.

I agree with most comments, I have a Thai partner and 2 children, I would never risk anything that could stop me from returning to them. Even though your over stay is unintentional, Play it safe and abide by there laws.

Of course there is a history of overstaying in Thailand and having to pay fines per day at immigration…. But if you apply to extend your visa, there will definitely be no problem.

Was 500 baht per day a few years ago but might have changed

For Thailand immigration purposes?Probably not (unless as already mentioned, you get caught by police on an overstay, in which case that could be a very serious problem indeed.)
For travel to other countries, that might also cause a problem. The overstay will be noted on your passport and could be cause for denial of entry for that other country (I had a sister in law, overstayed in Korea 1 day and was refused entry into Japan, was held at the airport immigration ‘jail’ and had to immediately book a flight out.)
You do you, but personally I would pay for the extension, or if that wasn’t possible I would rebook my flight to make sure I had no follow-on issues … if I had just mistakenly overstayed, I personally would spill coffee on my passport and apply for a new one … having an overstay in your passport is just not worth the chance.)
spilling coffee over your old passport or using an emergency passport, is not a solution either, as your overstay will come up on the central computer of the Thai immigration 😃 😎 as soon as you want to exit the kingdom

The fact you are asking...listen to your gut, or make a phone call to immigration.
I was on an overstay for 2 days as I was in hospital. I paid the fine at the airport. I told the lady at immigration and she said no problem. I asked her when I come back to Thailand next year will I have a problem. and she said no.

Pay 15 dollars each day. Then on your record.

No not at all I had a problem with flights at one time and missed it I was ok if I got on flight but by the time I got one I was 3 days over stay I told them at airport and went to immigration at airport it was just a fine and no problems with coming back .no black marks at all ..so you will be ok

Why tempt providence just get an extension?

Do it and let us know if it made a problem, so we all can be extra careful 🤣

Short answer, yes

Are you planning to overstay or are you in the midst of an overstay now? If currently not yet on overstay, it would be best for you to go to your local immigration office, pay the 1900 and get an extension. Unless you’re already on an extension.

Not unless you get red overstay stamp in your passport

Can you recall a time where breaking the law helped you?
3 days OV - you will simply pay the fine at airport during your passport checking. that's all. Don't even worry for your next visit. And don't listen much scumbags comments here put you in stress for nothing.
I get castigated whenever I post a comment about the potential consequences of being caught on overstay as scaremongering. I post those comments because it COULD happen. It doesn’t often but it does. Do you really want to advise people that a 3 day overstay will never be a problem for others?
And so why would you make a comment that 3 days is not ever going to be an issue? It’s generally never an issue coming back into Thailand- although in theory it could. It’s the issue of being caught on overstay whilst in Thailand that could be a game changer.
What a completely useless comment. 1,000 baht in your passport won’t get you out of a fine of 1,500 baht for 3 days overstay. It certainly won’t help if you are caught before the airport.
I don’t know if you’ve twigged from past posts that I volunteer at Phuket immigration. I see what happens when you’re caught on overstay. It’s not nice. It happens rarely but it happens. I don’t need coffee to see it. Scaremongering may cause others not to have those issues by staying within the law. For the 99.9% of those that get to the airport it’s a slap on the wrist and a fine and a small stamp in their passport. For the 0.01% it’s a whole different ball game. Potential life changer.
Break the law and you might get away with it. Perhaps you won’t.
if you are caught on overstay and sent to a detention centre and deported from Thailand and banned for 5 years it could be a life changer. I keep trying to stress that it rarely happens but it could. You don’t want to be the one when it does.
I’m explaining that it’s potentially an issue and not pure roses. The potential is there. It’s slight but it has happened. Saying to someone that they’ll have “no problems” is just bad advise. They could. They perhaps won’t but they could.
. I know your intensions and advice. They are for the good for people

If something were to happen whilst you were on your three day overstay like a stop at a police checkpoint or you having an accident or anything then it could have serious repercussions. Getting caught on overstay could lead to getting sent to court, then being fined for breaking the law and being sent to an immigration detention centre and then being deported from Thailand and banned for 5 years.
If you manage to get to the airport it’s just a fine for the number of days overstay (as long as it’s under 90 days) but why risk the potential?
3 days overstay is 1,500. An extension is 1,900 baht. 400 baht difference is a whole lot of peace of mind.
after three days overstay, Immigration might be tempted to issue only a "application denied you have 7 days to leave the kingdom" stamp. AND make him pay the fine, 500.- THB per day. I wouldn't risk it. If it was only one day, I would visit Immigration and apply for the 30 days touristic extension (if applicable). But not when you already accumulated three days

Maybe yes. Maybe no.
Every entry is at the discretion of the immigration officer you're standing in front of. They'll look at many different factors and previous overstay is one of them.
If you've been gone for a long time and haven't spent a lot of time in Thailand recently, probably no issues.

Probably.
