TLDR : Answer Summary
When a person overstays their visa in Thailand, there are significant consequences based on the length of the overstay. If the overstay is 90 days or less, a fine of 500 baht per day applies, capped at 20,000 baht, and an overstay stamp is placed in their passport, allowing them to leave without further issues. If the overstay exceeds 90 days, the penalty escalates to a flat fee of 20,000 baht and a ban from re-entering Thailand, which varies depending on how long the overstay lasted. If caught by authorities or at a random checkpoint, the overstayer may face detention, deportation, and possible long-term bans on re-entry. Seeking the help of an immigration agent may facilitate the exit process but can come with high costs depending on the length of the overstay.

I thought the same thing. Because an immigration officer now won’t bother to look the poster up

Just don't overstay. !! You know when uou enter the country the date you are meant to leave... if you break immigration laws thai prisons are not a good place to be....so unless you are in a coma in hospital...you deserve the consequences

watch your terminology! You cannot "overstay a visa", because your visa expires upon entry. You can only "overstay your stay permit"

Find the right agent and they will have contacts with immigration and make your exit smoother. It won't be cheap but u will avoid being held in detention..assuming a long overstay....

That's a very good advice!! An agent with the right connections, can help to avoid any consequences. Especially interesting for people with long overstay. But be aware, as longer the overstay is, and you will avoid to be banned, the higher the "appreciation" money will be. πŸ˜„πŸ‘

Overstayed for how long?

If caught by the police, then it's the clink. You are then detained until a trial, miss your flight. The fine is reduced each day you are detained. You have to pay for the deportation flight, full price, from your cell. At that point many don't have access to ready cash, and need help from home. The police know where your friend is staying. I wouldn't waste time on Facebook asking for advice.

Oh dear Bonnie, resorting to name calling is definitely a sign of losing an argument! πŸ˜‚. Call me what you like,I don't care, used to be a prison officer! Think about it! You have a point about the ' lose' I accept. But ' folks' no, both folk and folks indicate the plural!

And it is texting,have you witnessed a lot of that,I'm sure you have! Attrocious English a lot of it! But if you feel you have to nitpick,be my guest!
Mark *******
I agree entirely and I've only overstayed once for one day,which was a silly mistake; I paid 500 baht. So straight to prison, obviously not; what hogwash Robert! I'm certainly not giving advice like some knowalls on this cite! Just commentsπŸ˜‚,and anyone with a bit of intelligence will realize that! As for being awake Kim, yep alert and sober unlike a lot of farangs in this country! Love your input folk,seems I've rattled a few cages! Love it! Don't loose your sense of humour folk,if you actually have one! πŸ˜‚ And I'm an ex prison officer of 24 years,in the UK; but always had the keys! Best way!

@Mark ******
Since you're so smug, allow me to say *lose, *folks, and you use a space after a comma.

But do carry on. Working in one country is always the same in every other.
Robert *********
But !!!

Nobody tells you .

If you are stopped and checked(happens)

Straight to immigration prison

You will not like it much .

Overstating is plain stupid
Robert *********
@Mark ******
mark ,you need to wake up and stop giving poor advise .

If you are stopped and checked .

It's straight to immigration prison .

Overstay is simply stupid

@Mark ******
totally nonsense - no pessimistic paranoia here! And it wasn't Todd who answered. You sure you are awake??

If they go to the airport to leave Thailand and it's 90 days or less overstay, they'll pay 500 baht per day up to a maximum of 20,000 baht, they'll receive an overstay stamp in their passport, and they'll be allowed to leave.

If it's over 90 days and they arrive at the airport to leave, they'll pay 20,000 baht and be banned from Thailand according to how long they are on overstay. It would be the left side of the attached image.

If they turn themselves into police or have any interaction with the police like a random checkpoint, they'll be arrested, held in detention, deported and banned from Thailand. How long the ban lasts depends on how long they are on overstay, starting at 1 day of overstay. It would be the right side of the attached image.
