Will I be allowed to leave Thailand if I overstay my visa and pay the fine?

Will I be allowed to leave if I overstay? So based on the new COVID-19 extensions I will not be able to extend because I've had a Non-Imm visa at one point (I initially entered visa exempt). I had originally planned to leave in January, but my flight to Hong Kong was cancelled (but I wouldn't have been able to reenter anyways).

My current extension expires March 1st and I am in the process of obtaining a visa to enter Taiwan, but flights must be scheduled between March 17th - March 20th. I've seen posts saying that I will still be asked to leave in 7 days regardless (no exceptions?), so will applying for an extension even matter? I do not mind paying the overstay fine, but I'm worried I will be prevented from leaving and miss my flight.

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you overstay your visa in Thailand, you can typically still leave the country by paying a fine of 500 THB per day at the airport. It is advisable to visit the immigration office to inquire about potentially applying for an extension, especially if you have proof of a canceled flight and evidence of attempts to schedule a new flight within the required timeframe.

As long as you can go to the airport and pay the overstay fine of 500 thb/day at passport control upon departure, I don't think you will have an issue leaving Thailand.

Or, what I would try to do is:

Go to the immigration office and ask if you can apply for an extension (before actually applying any), bringing:

- the proof of your original flight had been canceled

- you tried to book an earlier flight

- final fixed flight ticket

I think the risk is higher if you are caught in town during those 3 weeks.

I don't recall anyone who can pay the fine (max 20K) at the airport was held at the airport before departure unless a foreigner was trying to make a problem upon leaving, such as arguing about fine, etc, even with much longer overstay (long enough you will be blackelisted)

Thanks, never overstayed before so I wasn't sure if I needed to go to immigration and pay the fine in advanced or I'd be at risk being held up at the airport.
