I have a bit of a problem with my visa, when I arrived in September, I got what I thought was a 3 month visa from the thai embassy in my country, but turns out it was a 3 month single entry visa, I tried to leave in December to be told I had overstayed by 22 days, I couldn't pay the fine so they wouldn't let me on the plane I've been here since, I've bought another ticket to leave on Monday, what can I expect from immigration again when I inform them I can't pay the fine? Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you approach immigration regarding your overstay and cannot pay the fine, you may face arrest and be taken to an immigration detention center (IDC). There, you will see a judge who will impose a fee (between 3,000 to 5,000 baht) instead of the overstay fine but will also enforce a 5-year ban from re-entering Thailand. You will remain in the IDC until your scheduled flight, which must be with an approved carrier for deportees.

Okay let's sort out exactly how it works when you "turn yourself in" on overstay <- as in you don't have the funds to pay the fine you ran up by overstaying.

You will get arrested, transferred to IDC <- immigration detention center. They will hold you there until you see a judge, the judge will waive the overstay fine and charge you between 3 and 5 K baht <- there is no way out of that at all. You'll get banned for 5 years <- there is no way out of that either.

They will then take you back to IDC where you will be held until your flight out, they will take you in a van to the airport <- that used to cost 800 more baht <-there is no way out of that either

You also have to fly back on an approved carrier <- one that takes deportees back to your country, <meaning you can't just pick a flight you want with an airline you want.

That's it, you stay out of the country for the 5 years until the ban/blacklisting runs out and you can come back no problem.
