What is the procedure for paying the overstay fine? I am leaving Thailand two days after my extension runs out. Unfortunately, I am stuck here waiting for a document to get notorized that my employer needs outside of Thailand. So it will be a few days. Where will I pay the fine in the airport? Right at the immigration desk?

TLDR : Answer Summary
To pay the overstay fine when leaving Thailand, head to the immigration desk at the airport. After going through passport control, the officers will guide you to the appropriate office to settle your fine, which is usually done in cash (approximately 500 baht per day overstayed, capped at 20,000 baht). It's advisable to carry the cash with you. If you apply for a failed extension instead, you can get a 7-day grace period for a fee of 1900 baht, which might be a better option depending on your situation. Be cautious about overstaying, as it could have future implications for re-entering Thailand or other countries.

Better go to immigration Chang Wattana ask for visa extension. They will give you 7 days extension with a fee of 1900 baht.

Paying overstay also works but might affect for visa in future when you come again to Thailand.

Yea 1900 baht would be better than 500 baht a day

That's if he gets to the airport. If caught in a random police check etc. it's the detention centre, overstay fine, followed by deportation and a possible ban. I'll pay the 1900B rather than take the risk thanks.

I’m very scared of Thai immigration and police

and they are getting keener on overstays, actively seeking people now in places such as Phuket so not worth the risk to save 1900B
Darren **********
I’d rather not risk anything in Thailand,

If you are on an overstay already, disregard the following.

If you plan on staying longer than your extension allows, you could apply for one more extension at your corresponding immigration office with the intention of purposely getting denied. Once it's denied, immigration will give you 1 week to leave the country. It costs the same as a successful extension.

Many people do it and immigration understands this trick too. As long as they get money, they'll gladly do this in your favor.

The 1900 baht fee is cheaper than the 500฿ × 7 days = 3,500฿ of overstay.

Not to mention risking getting deported if found before you exit.

After you pass immigration you’ll see the overstay counter. The immigration officer will point you in the right direction.

I wouldn’t recommend you do overstay, it could go against you in the future. Not just Thailand but other countries as well.

You could go and get the 7 day denial stamp at immigration. It does cost the same, 1900 baht. But you won’t have an overstay stamp in your passport.

It’s very clearly stated almost everywhere you look that overstaying can have serious adverse effects … you’re welcome

everyone is well aware. I was mocking a ridiculous comment which Clarence appears to have wisely removed 😂.

And so to help the poster out here, as we can all see any overstay up to 89 days has NO adverse effect. Pay your fine as clearly stated. Thx. Now someone can actually benefit from that.

I’m impressed at how nails you are that being arrested and processed through a Thai immigration detention centre isn’t an adversity for you

Salute Champ! 🙌🙌🤩

I’m impressed at how you think Thai tourism is keen to run tourists through detention centers. And how many overstayers get randomly arrested 😂😂Round of applause.

@Todd ********
I’m glad you asked for some more data.

As luck would have it: Thailand has the highest arrest rate for British tourists of any country in the world (it’s only around 1 a day v 8 per day in Spain, but on a per capita basis it’s the highest)

And you aren’t a tourist if you don’t have a valid permission to be in the country - you’re an illegal immigrant and will be processed through immigration detention. I’ve had to visit enough of them 🫣

You really should check in with your embassy before you spread such unwise advice to the multitude of fools out there. I’m sure they’ll make it clear to you 🙂

as luck would have it, drunken Brit’s can be wankers anywhere. So this often needs to be addressed by local authorities. However, it’s mostly Britons, nobody really cares.

Re - your wildly misleading second paragraph, your previous photo addresses the what actually happens with tourist overstays. You pay your fine and move on. They even have a dedicated office in BKK. Next time you are there, have a look.

I’m not advising a damn thing. Simply bringing the silly rhetoric levels down to medium burn. Check in with embassy, they can clarify for you

Secretly I always enjoyed visiting the smug prisoners who were outraged to learn that rules also applied to them

Enjoy your overstay 🙌

just be careful of police to be arrested.

in all fairness I have about 15 overstays from a dozen or so countries. You pay the fine and exit. Nobody really cares about the average tourist who is having fun and stays longer. I have several from Thailand and never created an issue. And the people in the overstay office were very nice. 🤷‍♂️
Clarence **********
@Todd ********
is there an immigration link you can provide that reflects that overstays for tourist is acceptable and would have no future adverse effects. Much appreciated.
Randy ********
@Todd ********
good for you! Nobody cares until someone does and you have issues trying to get into a country. Imagine, you go away on a vacation, everything paid. You get to the immigration officer and they deny you entry. All because you wanted to overstay in another country. I will never understand why people let themselves get into these situations with overstays. It’s not hard to follow rules. I guess it is difficult for some.

@Randy *******
the overstay stamp is in Thai and not really obvious that it's not just a normal stamp. So idk what other country would even know what the stamp means
Todd *********
@Randy *******
100% agreed. One day it ‘could’ matter. Or not. It’s a great little money maker for all governments and works for them as well. Which is why there are generally no issues with it. Overstay saves you wasting a morning at immigration the govt gets the additional revenue… that’s why those fines exist. Win-win. You do the proverbial crime and you pay the appropriate fine. Case closed.

What are the odds of being denied access in France because of 2 day overstay in Thailand? Absolute zero.

The office where you got your extension

what stamp do you have now? Exempt stamp, you go to Lak Si. If it’s a visa you’re on, you go to Chaengwattana.

I didn't know I could get another extension

@Sean **********
It's an extension denied stamp, the lesser of two evils (better than overstay)
Randy ********
@Sean **********
it’s basically an extension telling you that you have to leave before 7 days. It starts the day you apply. So if I were you I’d do it at the end of your current stamp so you have those days.

Just get in line for passport control and when they see you have an overstay they'll direct you to the relevant office. Make sure you have the baht in cash to pay.
