Update on the previous 10 day quarantine that passed someone somewhere. It's only for 6 countries (yes, China is one), you can only travel to certain provinces after quarantine, and you have to wear a tracking device...

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Thai government has updated its quarantine requirements, reducing the isolation period for travelers from six low-risk countries—China, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand—from 14 days to 10 days upon entry. However, travelers must wear tracking devices during their quarantine and can only travel to specific provinces afterward. There is concern among expats and commenters regarding the consistency and fairness of these restrictions, especially in light of ongoing pandemic conditions in various countries.

At this point, it's all about politics now. I assume that Thailand is holding out it's hands for some fat WHO checks. Hence why the country has been so slow at opening up, despite the detrimental effects on the economy, not only tourism, but business travel and dampened investor sentiment.
David ********
Is there any list of provinces that are included? Is Songkhla included on it?

Wouldn't it be the whole country?

They are saying it's only ten provinces.

This is just silly. High risk or not high risk should decide if one can enter. Length of quarantine should be dependent on the science of the virus. This sounds more political than anything else.

More fake news - "Arrivals from countries deemed low risk – China, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand – will only have to quarantine 10 days after the plan wins approval, Kiattiphum Wongrajit of the Public Health Ministry said." So the plan has not been passed and no guarantee it will pass.

yes but people coming from UK, States, Brazil or whereever can still carry and are certainly more likely to than those who have come from countries known to have dealt with Covid-19. And Thais sometimes catch 16 people a day with paper say they do negative test.
Stuart *********
Thailand’s Department of Mental Health reported a 22% rise in the suicide rate in the first 6 months of this year, some of the rise, they say, could be attributed to additional hardships from the lockdowns, business closures and restrictions imposed during Thailand’s outbreak in the early stages of the global pandemic. There is also anecdotal evidence in a rise of foreign suicides during the Covid-19 pandemic although there are no official statistics about the current rates.

Thailand, ranked in 32nd place in 2019 with 14.4 of suicides per 100.000 population… nearly 10,000 suicide deaths in 2019, The country holds the unenviable position of number 1 among ASEAN

In low-risk countries The list of countries is as follows

Have they also made an agreement with the virus to make sure it shows its self by the 10th day specifically for these 6 countries. Rather than 14 days like it does in every other country. ?
Paul *******
@Paul ******
In many European countries it's been reduced down to 7 days. This applies for instance, to France which is like 4th in the world for infections now.

Myanmar, during it's second wave actually REDUCED it's quarantine requirement for mild and asymptomatic cases down to 11 days.

Given how much better developed the medical system is in Thailand compared to Myanmar, and how the latter has almost 20 times as many cases as the former, including
*****
active cases, vs about 120 in Thailand, there is no question that Thailand can safely reduce the quarantine period, even lift it for nationals of some countries such as China, Taiwan, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam (and Australia/New Zealand).
Oliver ********
David Broadfoot exactly. a good testing system starts by testing those who come into direct contact with an infected person, then those who might have come into contact with them, and so on. after a few degrees of separation the probability of finding an infected person becomes so low that testing is almost certainly not going to find any more infected. hence, why the positivity rate is so much higher (by several orders of magnitude) in most western countries, compared to thailand and other countries in the far east.
Shane **********

Different Strain of Virus Obviously
Oliver ********
@Paul ******
the incidence of the virus is so low in those 6 countries that the probability of an infected person producing false negative test results throughout 10 days quarantine and slipping into the thai public is basically zero
Stuart *********
@Oliver *******
so COVID 19 acts differently in the residence of them countries if your infected your infected if your not then the incubation period surely is the same for everyone
Oliver ********
@Stuart ********
yes covid acts the same but far less people are infected in east asian / south east asian countries than in europe / america, by several orders of magnitude in fact, so for example, the risk of an infected person slipping through quarantine is the same for 100 western tourists as it would be for 100,000 or 1,000,000 asian tourists, so obviously it makes sense to prioritize the latter.
Stuart *********
@Oliver *******
Thailand's Bureau of Epidemiology reported and additional 2922 dengue fever cases during the past week, bringing the country total to 50,660 total (DHF, DSS and dengue fever) cases. In addition, four additional dengue related deaths were reported, bringing the death toll year to date to 36.2 Sep 2020 this is masking there COVID
Oliver ********
@Stuart ********
the symptoms of dengue fever are normally very different to covid and a few dozen deaths from that does nothing to suggest the thai government is hiding tens of thousands of covid deaths, and hundreds of thousands of covid hospitalisations, as they would need to be doing if covid is anything like as prevalent here as it is in the west. the only similarity between covid and dengue is how seriously the thai government takes it (they follow up with every dengue fever case, survey the patient on their recent movements, and send pest control teams to areas where patterns emerge to try to eradicate the mosquitoes).
Stuart *********
@Oliver *******
can you tell the numbers of people in Thailand being tested for COVID. I doubt it how many people die in the villages that they just get on with it Thailand are only testing people entering the country. Show me the figures
Stuart *********
@Oliver *******
but it only take one to cause a pandemic. As China can testify but you only know how many as the virus by testing what is the testing in Thailand per head of population. And how dengue fever as risen.

All deaths in the Uk 14 days after a COVID test is put down as death through COVID.
Oliver ********
@Stuart ********
it's impossible to eliminate all risks (many people cross thailand's land borders illegally every day for example). the key is about balancing risk and return. allowing visitors in from countries where the incidence of covid is similar to thailand (with the added condition of testing and 10 days quarantine) is so close to zero risk it may as well be zero (similar to risk of a new round of mad cow disease from imported beef), and when compared to the value to the economy it's a no brainer to allow visitors from those key asian markets to return.
Stuart *********
@Oliver *******
I agree that they should be taking small steps but a negative test is a negative test. And if after 10 or 14 days your negative your negative doesn’t matter what country your from. If I was an American or a Brit with 10 million baht to invest or require medical treatment I would be granted a visa. If after quarantine and a negative test you catch COVID then that’s Thailand’s failure. It should be about the disease not the country
Rick *******
@Oliver *******
, you can not use the coronavirus statistics to determine if a country has low incidence of coronavirus unless you test the entire country at the same time. Low number of tests equals low infection rate, high number of testing, higher number of cases.
เอ็ดเวิร์ด *******
@Rick ******
Wrong. You obviously are not familiar with Asian countries such as South Korea. Maybe you're getting it mixed up with North Korea.
Oliver ********
@Rick ******
death count is the best way to judge the incidence of the virus. in most big western countries thousands of people are dying with covid every week. in east asia / south east asia countries it's been a few dozen in the last half year. it's like a different world.
Rick *******
@Oliver *******
, the death count is totally inaccurate since deaths caused by Covid-19 are being reported incorrectly, or not at all.
เอ็ดเวิร์ด *******
@Rick ******
I didn't happen to see your degree in epidemiology.
Rick *******
I have a degree in pharmacology and part of that degree has numerous classes in infectious diseases and epidemiology. What is your background?
Oliver ********
@Rick ******
unless you believe hospitals across asia are just refusing to treat covid patients and the governments are hiding tens of thousands of dead bodies in secret mass graves and silencing all their friends, family, colleagues, and health workers, through some kind of men in black style memory eraser technology, then it's clear the incidence of covid over here is not comparable to over there.
