TLDR : Answer Summary
UK passport holders seeking affordable and nearby destinations without a visa can consider countries like Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, or Cambodia. Vietnam allows a visa-free stay for up to 45 days, while Laos and Cambodia can be accessed with a visa on arrival for approximately $40. Malaysia also offers visa exemption for UK citizens. Travel to these locations is generally inexpensive, with various cost-effective options available for accommodation and transport.

I’ve just done Laos for the second time.

Best cost effective border run by far.

Return ticket was just over 3000bht.

You need $40 USD for visa on arrival. You can pay 1500 bht also. I downloaded the visa application form, printed and filled it in before I left Thailand. I escaped the queues for forms and pens and was through in 10 minutes.

The place is so cheap it’s unbelievable. Airport is right inside Vientiane so quick airport taxi to hotel, standard cost is 180,000 Lak, which is around £6.50.

I stayed at an expensive hotel as I was meeting up with friends who had already booked there. But you can use Agoda to find somewhere desirable. The first time I went I stayed down by the river. Try look for a place close-ish to The Tipsy Elephant Roof Top Bar. That’s where most bars restaurants are. Taxis to places from our hotel were no more than 50k - 70k Lak (£2 - £3) using an app called Loca, similar to BOLT, which you can also use there. Food and beer is dirt cheap, even in the nicer venues.

Most places accept Thai baht as payment so no real need to exchange money. You will get baht or Lak back in change.

NOTE: Vientiane is much quieter than anywhere in Thailand. Not much happening at all. So expect a very relaxing and quiet day or two. But if you fancy a beer with some live music I’d recommend Wind West bar. Cosy place with a good atmosphere. Because of the lack of choice, we also went to Hard Rock, not my usual go to, but it was ok.

It would seem it’s up to the Thai official. If he thinks you are abusing the 60 day visa exempt, they ask you to get the correct visa if you want to stay longer ( I may stand corrected but it’s how I understand it )

correct Steve. In my own experience, the officer may well check to see if you are not really a tourist but a long stayer

There is no given time so it will vary by border, but generally most you can just turn around and come back. Same for re-entry into Thailand, it will be up to the immigration officer you stand in front of

if a person strings together multiple consecutive visa exempt stays in Thailand, immigration starts to pay attention and might deny entry or give a warning to get some type of long stay visa. On the other hand if visa exempt stays in Thailand are separated by stays of reasonable duration in other countries, then you should be fine. In this latter example, you are functioning as a tourist, not someone who is trying to stay long-term in Thailand on short term visa exemptions and extensions.

Thanks. I have a return flight to UK and proof of funds in UK. I fully accept though it will be decision of the immigration officer. I am 72 and dress smart when travelling.

baht or equivalent in cash, proof of funds in UK won't work.

Most times they don't ask at all.

Uk passport, but you probably need to use approximately 40 USD at most border to get a visa on arrival. But you’ve got free visa exemption for Malaysia.

You can fly to Vietnam. It’s cheaper than Thailand and very beautiful. On a UK passport you don’t need a visa and can stay up to 45 days.

if UK can fly into Vietnam with no visa, you’re LUCKY. From US, we needed e-visa and that was a mess and seems like they have a routine “ problem” they find with it at departure flight but “can fix” for $350 USD. Alternative is re-apply and wait the 3-5 days it took for visa approval. 😡

you’re lucky then. It wasn’t an issue getting out. It was an issue leaving & boarding flight for Vietnam. I’ve heard people report this “scam” and I personally know a Vietnamese lady who lives in the US get picked out like this at the airport. She raised hell and pitched a fit so they let her go😅. I was of the mind to say “forget it! I don’t need to go” but realised the air ticket was non refundable nor would our hotel accommodation😨. So gave them $350 (only want cash) and begrudgingly went on.

just did it yesterday no issue. Past 10 yrs no problems but I will say be careful with Vietjet when buying through a third party like flight hub. I Entered my name correctly but apparently it didn’t transfer correctly and dinged me $5 to make the correction.

Hoi An is sweet. Need to fly to Da Nang then a one hour drive. If you want to stay longer, go to Hanoi and book an overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay. But, there are many beautiful places to see. Just depends on the amount of time you have.
