Dear knowledgeable all. A question please (my first post here): In late October I'm flying to Thailand from UK, visiting Bangkok, in part, as a dignitary at a festival, but there for a total of 2 weeks. During that stay I would like to attend a 3-day event in Vietnam, flying from BKK to Ho Chi Minh City and then returning to BKK. Can you tell me if there are any special VISA requirements needed between Thai-Vietnam-Thai, given my foreign status? Many thanks all in advance. :-)

TLDR : Answer Summary
A UK citizen visiting Thailand for two weeks, with plans to attend an event in Vietnam, can enter Thailand visa-exempt for 30 days and Vietnam for 15 days. The traveler does not need to obtain any visas in advance but should ensure they have an onward ticket, proof of accommodation, and sufficient cash. There are no restrictions on the number of times they can enter Thailand in a year, provided they meet entry requirements. They can also obtain a re-entry permit if needed before leaving for Vietnam.
.... perhaps more worrying guys - my next question because I thought I saw a comment yesterday but can't locate it now: Is there a rule about how many times you can visit for such events in a year? I visited BKK in April for two weeks and then for 7 days in June. This series of events I'm intending to visit are in Late October and into November for another 2 weeks. Is it allowed or is there a way around it if not?
agree. No restriction. Just have proof of accommodation, onward ticket and 20k baht cash (any currency), in the highly unlikely event that you're asked
Thanks, Amy - so there is no problem with me visiting Thailand for a 3rd time in the year on my regular passport? I'm not very savvy with these things. :-)
You're only here for 2 weeks so no there's no visa you need to get before hand. You'll get stamped in on what's called a 30 day visa exempt entry when you land here. When you go to vietnam because you're a brit you'll get stamped in for 15 days for free. When you come back to thailand you'll get another 30 day visa exempt entry stamp.
I follow this site to learn but even I know UK citizen can enter Thailand visa exempt for 30 days then Vietnam same visa exempt for 15 days then same again on re-entry into Thailand get another 30 days
Define 'as a dignitary at a festival'? On a UK passport you get 30 days visa exempt in Thailand and 15 days visa exempt in Vietnam, so in principle you don't need a visa at all. The caveat to that is basically if the festival constitutes volunteering or something?
Nobody has to know that u are *judging a music festival*, do yourself a favor and just say that u are attending a music festival... no officer will care to develop on the matter.
I would argue that no visa is required for Thailand either. However, I have got into disagreements before about this ;). If you're 'attending an event' or 'participating in a trade show or conference' then you are allowed to do this on a visa exemption. Of course, judging a music festival is not covered specifically by the rules, so the potential for endless discussion ensues....
I believe that the Thai Immigration would classify your visit as working and that you will therefore need a work permit which you should request the organizers of the music competition to organize for you.
No visa needed for your short stays in Thailand as you will receive a 30 day exemption on arrival at the airport. For Vietnam you should apply earlier for a Visa on Arrival (VOA) which you can get online from any tour operator in Vietnam.
