TLDR : Answer Summary
A UK passport holder traveling to Thailand for 85 days cannot rely solely on the visa exemption option. With visa exempt entry, a traveler can stay for 30 days, and this can be extended for an additional 30 days at an immigration office. However, this totals only 60 days, which is insufficient for an 85-day stay. The recommended option is to obtain a single-entry tourist visa prior to traveling, which allows for a 60-day stay upon entry plus a possible extension of 30 days in Thailand.

It's cheaper to buy e-ticket from the embassy for 60 days ยฃ30 you get 30 days free with a UK passport
from 1st November on, the "Thailand Pass" procedere must be applied and fulfilled for an entry into Thailand

visa exempt would only get you 60 days. a tourist visa will with an extension get you 90 days.

your best option is the single entry Tourist Visa . .gives you 60 days on entry and 30 more days for 1900 THB on Immigration

you get stamped in for 30 days on a visa exempt entry and you can get one 30 day extension at the immigration office from that so I'd say you're a few days short of the 85 days you wanna be here.
Get a single entry tourist visa from the thai consulate in your country before you come here. In the UK the thai consulate has stickerless e-visas so you don't even send your passport in

OR if on the rare chance you are married to a thai or are the father of a thai child you could get one 60 day visit thai family extension, so comin' in visa exempt for 30 days, then getting the 60 day visit family extension would work too
