TLDR : Answer Summary
The best and closest country for U.S. passport holders to fly to without requiring a visa is Malaysia, specifically Kuala Lumpur. You can return to Thailand immediately after your visit, as there is no minimum stay required, even allowing for a quick trip like lunch.
You can fly out, have lunch and come back. There's no minimum limit.
KL is a great place to visit for your visa runs.

If you have a recent history of staying in Thailand with the use of visa exempt entry, extensions and other visas, there's NO guarantee you will be allowed to reenter Thailand.
IF you have a DTV Visa, you should not have a problem reentering Thailand by Air ✈️
