Hi all. Hope someone can advise on the correct way of applying for TR visa from the Thai Embassy in the UK (London). I'm planning to stay in Thailand for 90 days, flights booked for...90 days. As I understand, TR visa is granted for 60 days and lets you extend it at a local immigration office, without leaving Thailand. What I'm straggling to understand is if I should apply for 60 days and provide proof of accommodation for 60 days, but confirmed flights showing 90 days stay in the country OR can I apply for 90 days straight away, knowing that on arrival I will be granted only 60 days? Thank you for your help in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on applying for a TR visa from the Thai Embassy in London to stay in Thailand for 90 days. They understand that a TR visa grants 60 days with a possibility for a 30-day extension in Thailand, but they are unsure whether they should provide proof for 60 days of accommodation or if they can apply for 90 days directly, considering their flight lasts 90 days. Comments suggest various options including applying for a visa exemption for 75 days, mentioning the need for an onward ticket, and confirming that the arrival date is counted as day one of their stay.

Just give the embassy details of your flights if they want to question it they will contact you.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this but the day you arrive in Thailand and get stamped in counts as Day 1 of your entry period rather than Day 0.

So you will need to calculate accordingly, especially if you are trying to maximise the period you can remain in the country in one stay.

@Eze *******
that is correct but for most people you arrive the day after you fly due to the distance travelling and time difference Eg I fly on Thursday but I don't arrive until Friday.

@Gerald *******
and you get stamped in on Friday too, all
@Eze *******
is saying is your arrival date (the day you stamp in) no matter the time counts as day ONE of your stay here

My understanding is, the embassy just wants to see a return (or onward) ticket. They know you can extend by an additional 30 days in-country. The airline check-in just needs to see a visa OR onward travel within 45 days. If you have a visa, they don’t have any obligation to check for proof of onward travel.

Generally for the embassy, they might accept 90 days. But your airline will want to see a flight out of Thailand within 60 days.

So it might be easier for you to figure out how to prove that you will be traveling out of Thailand after 60 days (you can google "onward travel ticket" for some cheap ideas) and then use that proof of leaving for both the embassy and your airline when you are checking in.

Then after you arrive, none of that matters and get your extension as planned.

Brandon, thank you for your reply. You got me worried now re the airlines’ requirements. I’ve already paid for a return flight on BA site (operated by Qatar Airways) and it’s 90 days since arriving to Thailand. I can’t show them another ‘onward ticket’ as they will clearly see that I’m returning in 90 days…. I’m afraid I’m even more lost now with how fill in the TR visa application and concerned if I’ll have some issues with boarding the plane with my current ticket.

I have never had a problem with my flight exceeding the 60 days, only once was I questioned at Manchester so I had to educate him about extensions and border runs.

check with the airline. I was in the same situation, had a 60 day tourist visa and a 90 day return ticket. Flew with Thai Airways without any issues of needing to show onward travel within 60 days.

Google onward travel ticket. You can rent a ticket to Vietnam or Singapore and tell your airline you're taking a side trip and returning to Thailand.

Might I suggest you keep it Simple...as the Thai Evisa requirements are stringent...

As you're from the UK...

Simply enter Thailand Visa EXEMPT which gets you 45 days stamp plus one 30 day extension of stay = 75 days.

Do a simple same day border bounce or possibly visit a neighbor SE Asia country...

On reentry you get another 45 days stamp.

This avoids the needed Booking requirements for Thai tourist visa and the financial statement requirements imposed by the UK Thai Embassy.

You can proceed with applying for the Evisa Tourist Visa...

The choice is yours.

I assume that you hold a passport from the UK ???

Or are with Ukraine passport?

James, thank you very much for the prompt and helpful reply, really appreciate it. Unfortunately, doing a visa run is not ideal for me and I would prefer to stay put in one place for the whole 90 days, hence my plan with TR visa application.

I’m British, with UK passport.

My key question is whether I state 90 days on the application and provide all supporting documents (including fully paid return flights, booked accommodation, etc) or do I state 60 days to match the initial visa that I should be granted on arrival….but they would not match my flights’ dates.

I have also noticed a reference to 120 days for TR, which got me even more confused with this process…. 🤷‍♂️

the UK Thai Embassy website, is confusing.

Show a sufficient (cancelable) booking to obtain the visa... then cancel it ..as you can travel within Thailand at will during your 60 + 30 day stay in Thailand.

Same for the flight departing Thailand...it needs to be within the first 60 days of your arrival...

BUT again... show a one way cheap flight to Phnom Penh... within the 60 days .. cancel it or throw it away.

The 120 days reference is again confusing as it appears on the UK Thai Embassy FAQ section of their website.

Just how long are you going to be staying in Thailand?

IF MORE than 90 days... the METV multiple entry tourist visa is a better option for you...as it can allow you Up to 9 months stay in Thailand with a border bounce.

I have never been pulled up for not having a flight within the 60 days but I guess there is allways a first time. I will find out on Friday as I fly and return home in April 😂
