TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers to Thailand can opt for a tourist visa (TR) for 60 days or enter visa-exempt for 30 days, with extensions possible for both. It's recommended to apply for the visa before arrival to simplify the process and avoid spending time at immigration offices for extensions. The online eVisa application process is straightforward and can be completed from home. Border runs allow for additional entries but vary based on the type of visa held.
The online process is very easy and fast. I applied on a Friday afternoon and received evisa back Monday morning. Only £30.

It doesn't take long online and for the questions you can't answer, we found either repeating our address or repeating our passport worked. If you get a 30 day on arrival exemption then you are wasting your holiday in Thailand going to immigration for extension. Now one guy did immigration in 20 mins in Bangkok but I went to phangan and it took all day as long lines so better spend time in net sorting it when you are watching tv rather than wasting a day of your time in Thailand. It's cheaper too...xxx

You can not get a tourist visa of any kind inside Thailand. All you can get is a 30 day extension on one you already have, or on a tourist visa exempt stamp.

Just book your return flight for 60 days and exstend once here but when you fill out your landing card put length of stay 30 days .

If there's any chance at all you want to stay for longer than 2 months, get the visa before you come to Thailand since you can extend an extra 30 days giving you 90 days total.
I always recommend getting the visa anyways because even for 60 days you don't have to spend half a day at the immigration office to get your extension, and it's easy since the evisa is all done online and you no longer have to mail anything in.
do you know if one can apply for the E visa if they are currently outside of their home country and flying to Thailand from that foreign (non home) country ?
technically you must apply from the country you're in. I know at least one person has tried and they were rejected because the flight they submitted on the application didn't originate in their home country.
You can check the evisa site and put what country you're from and what country you're in, it's possible that you could still be eligible for evisa even if you're not at home.

Barely any 'paperwork' for a 60 days tourist visa from the UK. It's an e-visa, everything's done online, super easy and you dont even have to leave the house.
I need a non O but can't apply inside the country unless I'm on a tourist visa or 30 day. All my money is in Thailand so can't show funds in UK bank. It's a pain.
Mine was easy. Cant remember the amount. I think I had about £10k in the account when I applied.

You can either apply for a tourist visa (TR) which would give you 60 days on arrival, or arrive with no visa, called visa exempt and get 30 days on arrival.
Both options allow for one extension at a local immigration office for a further 30 days at a cost of 1,900 baht.
