Hi I'm after some advice. So I'm going to be in Thailand to visit my girlfriend on 10 December for 45 days. A standard visa lasts 30 days so will I need to apply for a 60 day visa or can I go across the border and back into Thailand to get another 30 day visa? Thanks in advance

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is seeking advice on whether to apply for a 60-day visa to Thailand or if they can enter on a 30-day visa and then extend it by 30 days. Several comments suggest that for UK passport holders, a 30-day visa exemption can be obtained upon arrival, and this can be extended for an additional 30 days at any immigration office for a fee of 1,900 baht. Some also recommend obtaining a 60-day visa before traveling, as it can save time and hassle during the stay. The conversation highlights the differences in procedures based on nationality and provides several options for extending the stay.

60 day visa from u.k

Get a 2 month one before you arrive. Yes, you can extend for 60 days, but it's 500 baht in taxis too (assuming you're in Bangkok - it is not accessible by train etc) plus could have to do some waiting around once there. Plus the traffic. Not worth the hassle....Get a visa before you arrive, I'd say. Even if it was more expensive, anything is better than waiting around and sitting in traffic, in my opinion.

There you go James Buchanan, from the UK. So free entry plus 1900 baht (£45-50) extension. Or £25 visa plus £10 return fee, via postal charge which incurs a fee, so say about £40. Plus, £7 odd for the royal mail special delivery. Total about £47, then don't forget the £5 for photos from a machine in the UK. Unless you wanna gomto London and just pay the £25...but lose a days work and pay travel fees!!

Extending the visa in country is a pain abit, but pretty easy really. If I ever need to extend, I arrive at the office at 8am, i'm jumping on my bike again at 9.30am. Of course if your staying more than 60 days then the SETV is definitely worth getting, otherwise I'd say there's not really alot in it moneywise.

Of course, the single entry vis from the UK saves you the hassle of extending when you are over there. It's also probably a good idea given the current situation with people getting hassled at the airport.

I would suggest the 60day from home if you have time. I

Tourist visa from home is certainly the easiest either way. I'm actually in the UK right now and heading back in a couple of weeks for only 35 days, but I'm thinking of getting the visa first, given the Horror stories that are going around I feel a full visa is safer. And I'll appreciate it when I don't have to go and extend 1 morning, all for the sake of 5 extra days!!

Yer I know. Sometimes I seem to forget that not everyone on these pages are in the same situation and the same place!b

Thanks fot that, btw nice to know there is a free bus in Chang Mai, in Ao Nang the taxi charge 600 Thb one way, no free bus. Depends on where he goes for his holiday to get the real costs.
Aaron ****************
Remember, I said there's not alot in it, I didn't suggest it was the all round best thing to do. It is always advisable to get a proper visa if you have the time though. It's easier, and it makes your entry into the country more likely. But, not necessarily cheaper.
Aaron ****************
So, 1900, + free transport 2 baht for photo copies = 1902 baht,

Oops, I forgot, can print the form off for free in the UK, or do in a shop there, so lets add 20 baht for fun.

1922 baht.....

That's about £48.05

Happy now

My bike I already owned for years, or I could always borrow a friends bike. The fuel cost is maybe 10 baht. failing that they have a free shuttle bus service to and from where the immigration office is in Chiang Mai, runs all day. 10 photos costs 100 baht (£2) appose to two visa photos in the UK which would cost £5. Photo copies cost 1 baht each. So 2 copies, one of the photo page, one of the page with stamp and the departure card together, total = 2 baht (5 pennies).

And making the photo's and copies needed in Thailand for Extension of Stay , transport to Immigration and back are for sure NOT FREE, but proberly cheaper than the UK. Always nice to tell how much it cost in one Country without mentioning the costs in another country. At least you tell you jump on your bike, how much did the bike cost? For a tourist a big expense to buy a bike just to go to Immigration on his holiday.

Thank you I am from the uk

Depends what passport you are using.. what
@Robert ******
said is true for the type of passport i have. But im not sure that it applies to every nationality. . In the same way that not every passport holder will be given 30 days to stay if they have no visa.. permission to stay without a visa i believe is only 15 days for certain passport holders.. and im not sure whether this can be extended at immigration or for how long.
Tod *********
you are correct and if the O/P tells us the country their passport is from we could give better advice ;)
Robert *******
Single Entry Tourist Visa for 60 days cost 1000 Thb and could be extendend with another 30 days for 1900 Thb or as mentioned Visa Exempt entry 30 days with Extension 1900 Thb for another 30 days but to save 900 Thb and a trip to Immigration depending on where you stay this could take a half day I would recommend the Visa option.
Tod *********
I agree with
@Rob***

The easiest and most trouble free way to do this is to get a single entry tourist visa from a thai consulate before you come here. That gives you 60 days when you stamp in.

That way you can enjoy your time here and not have to go to the immigration office and get an extension for 1900baht and who knows how many hours of your time..
Michael ********
As mentioned...30 day Visa exemption. then extend at immigration...2X copy of passport 1st page, departure card and entry stamp. Passport photos and proof of address(rental or letter from hotel or guarantor of where you are staying)
Aaron ****************
If you are from a country that can get 30 day Visa Exemption at the airport, then do this and extend by 30 days in country. Cheaper and easier than applying for a 2 month single entry visa in your home country (well, in the UK anyway)
Aaron ****************
The visa itself is £25, plus £10 fee for them to return it, so that's £35 by postal order already, which incurs a small fee so say £40. Then add the £5 which it costs to get photos from the machine in England. Then add the special delivery price, about £7.

This is more than 1000 baht.....

Or, take a day off work and go to London embassy, already lost £200 for a days work, then ass the travel fees.

If we round this all to about £50, them multiply that by 40 (baht), the worst exchange rate we could think of, it would still be 2000, so more expensive than the extension, even if only marginal.

So the SETV is is slightly more expensive or massively more expensive, depending on whether you post it or take a day of work. Either way, if I was plannin to spend less than 60 days in Thailand I'd probably just waster 2 hours one morning and 1900 baht at the immigration office In Chiang Mai. It's so simple and easy, get there at 8am, out the door at 9.30 am.
Steve *******
Its not cheaper or easier. The SETV is around 1000bt, cheaper than the 1900bt extention of stay, plus with an SETV there's no hassle of going to immigration to apply for the extention.
Graham *********
from uk....30 days on arrival...then 30 days extension at any immigration office in thailand...1900..bhat
Shahin **********
This info with more detailed explanation of what you need to extend your visa can be easily obtainable with a quick google search.
Shahin **********
Depending what passport you have you can get a 30 day visa exempt stamp on entry by air and then extend it by 30 days at your local immigration office with 1900 baht, filling out the correct forms, and providing the right documentation.
Wim **************
I see nobody is checking first where he is come from and give wrong answers.
Marco *********
You don't need any visa:

Get a 30 day visa exempt stamp when you arrive, then you can get an extra 30 day extension at any Immigration office just paying 1,900 baht
Marco *********
Visa is about 1000-1500 baht (it depends on embassy). If you live in a city with embassy, can be better to get a tourist visa. Some people need to afford extra costs to reach the city where the embassy is based in.

And, when you enter with a tourist visa, border officers check your return ticket, your hotel booking (at least 2 weeks) and 20,000 cash
Julia ************
It's almost double price of a visa though.
Gökhan ******
Standard visa that you apply in your country is 60 days and you can extend another 30 days in Thailand if you want to stay longer
