Do I need a tourist visa for my 6-week stay in Thailand, and can I extend it while I'm there?

Hi everyone I’m coming to Thailand for 6 weeks from the UK with a return flight already booked, will I need to sort a tourist visa as I’m staying over 30 days? And if so can I wait until I’m in Thailand to extend my visa ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the need for a tourist visa due to staying in Thailand for 6 weeks, exceeding the typical 30-day allowance. Comments suggest that while a 30-day extension can be obtained in Thailand, it may be advisable to apply for a TR visa (60 days) beforehand to avoid complications. Some recommend booking a cheap outbound flight to demonstrate exit plans if questioned.

I would just book a cheap Nok Air, Smile or Air Asia flight out of Bkk for around the 30 day Mark but not use it. At least you can show an outward flight if required. You can get a cheap flight with any of the above for about £50.

Easier and cheaper to get the visa before you go

Yes you can extend 30 days in country no problem.

Immigration will not be a problem, airline staff might be though they can stop you.

(It doesnt give clear instructions on the information website they use about easily available 30 day extension)

If you have time I would apply for the TR visa (60 days) then no problem.

actually the embassy are quite strict about those document. I try to not giving bank statement for my wife and just wrote a letter said I will support her stay but embassy reject it and require bank statement with at least 1500 inside her bank account

thankyou, I may not have time to apply for the visa so I’m not too sure what to do would be a lot of hassle to get turned away at the airport

Are you in UK if so its an e visa which doesnt take long to get, also if you want to stay longer (lots do after arrival) it gives you 60 days plus 30 day extension.

i have tagged your post into the onward flights topic.

There are services where you can rent an onward ticket or you can buy a cheap ticket to malaysia or Singapore.

Airlines are liable to return you to your destination if refused by immigration so they seem to have cracked down on this even though in reality immigration are highly unlikely to refuse you.
