Can I extend my stay in Thailand after my TR visa or re-enter on a 30-day exemption?

Good day!

I am coming to Thailand for 4 months this time round.

I have applied for a 60 day TR visa, (I’m in Austria) and am awaiting the results. Hopefully it will be positive.

We are leaving the country after 59 days to Australia for 2 weeks and then returning to Thailand for another 60 days.

Am I right in thinking, for the second 60 days, I can either get an extension after arriving on the 30 day exemption or take a flight out of the country and return again on a 30 day exemption?

I think the next year we will apply for the Multi entry visa, however the consulate advised we wouldn’t have enough time for it to come through this time round. Unfortunately I didn’t know about this visa earlier otherwise I would’ve applied for it.

Have a good day and thanks for any advice in advance! ✌️

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to stay in Thailand for four months, applying for a 60-day TR visa and considering options for the second 60-day stay after a brief trip to Australia. They are confirming whether it's possible to extend their visa upon re-entry or use a 30-day exemption. Comments provide support for both options as viable solutions, along with advice about typical travel patterns and considerations about domestic flight bookings for entry into Thailand.

Due to a clerical error on my part, my 60 day tourist visa was cancelled, nor would I have had the time to re-apply as it usually can take up to 25 business days to re-apply and I would have missed my departure flight. I might try visa exemption (Canada) and realize which docs/cash to bring. My question is: I will show that I will be staying in Chiang Mai, but does Immigration need prove of domestic flight booking to CMX? I was hoping to book a domestic once I clear Immigration.Thanks.

As long as you are following a normal pattern a tourist would follow in visiting other countries, and not just crossing and returning as fast as you can, you won't have any problems. There are lots of people that base out of Bangkok when traveling to, and touring surrounding countries. There are quite a few countries within a 3 hour flight from Bangkok...hehe.

yes I agree. I would probably fly out for 4 nights and then return.

If your TR60 doesn't get approved in time you can enter Visa Exempt first then extend it to get your first 60 days then use your TR60 within its 90 day validity on your return from Australia

Yes your plan should work fine. You can either apply for the 30 day extension or take a trip out and return. Just depends on what works best with your plans and if you want to take a trip somewhere at that time.
