Can I apply for the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) at a Thai embassy in another country if I work remotely for a company in New Zealand?

Hi, I am planning to apply for the DTV. I am a remote worker for a company in New Zealand, because of this, do I need to apply for the visa at a Thai embassy in NZ or can I apply at a Thai embassy in another country?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The DTV visa application does not have to be made in New Zealand; you can apply at a Thai embassy or consulate in another country where you are currently located. It is advised to avoid the Thai embassy in Wellington, NZ, due to high application costs, and consider applying in a nearby country instead. However, confirm with the specific embassy about jurisdiction and application eligibility before proceeding, as some countries have restrictions on visa applications.

DO NOT APPLY for a DTV (or ANY thai visa) from the thai consulate in Wellington New Zealand.

Come here on a free stamp entry and then apply at a nearby consulate that charges a "normal price" for visas

2000 NZD is OVER 41K baht, in Lao the visa is 10K baht, in Phnom Penh it's 400USD, in the consulates in Vietnam it's 340USD

If you’re planning on applying outside NZ, check with the respective embassy beforehand if it’s possible to apply through them. They sometimes have info on their local websites which jurisdictions they service.

For example: Wife and I applied at the closest embassy we were at the time in Athens, paid them the fees, submitted all the docs. Got an email the next day saying we needed to apply at Ankara, Turkey (as Athens embassy only services those living in Malta, Serbia and North Macedonia).

The costs are non refundable (€700) so just check the embassy jurisdiction first to be sure it’s okay 👍

Thank you for this info. I heard that I had to apply for the visa in the same country as the company I work for but I guess this isn't the case.

You need to apply for the visa at the place you're currently located at, otherwise it might get rejected. Even if your work is NZ based, if you visit another country, you can also apply there. Note SOME countries (namely South Korea, Japan and others) accept applications only for nationals and local registered foreing residents (not tourists).

thank you for this information. I am looking at applying in Hong Kong, do you happen to know if they accept applications from tourists? In any case I will ask them, but thought you might know. Thanks 😊

Anonymous participant I’ve seen a couple of posts that say it’s not good for non residents applying there. On the other hand Taipei seems to be one of the easier consulates to apply. Some have had the visa same day, although I think I recall someone saying they’ve reverted to a next day turn around.

Absolutely not worth applying for it in NZ. It’ll cost you $2,000. Use a nearby to Thailand consulate where it will cost you about $500.
