Can I apply for a DTV visa from a country different from my residency?

Hello hello!

I have a question on the DTV visa: do you need to be in your country of residence when applying or can you be in your nationality/passport/birth country.

I’m a UK National but with residency in the UAE. I’m planning to come to thailand in sept for probably longer than 3 months and was thinking the DTV would be a great option.

I’m currently in the UK and when I go to apply for the DTV it says I can apply online on the basis my *current location* is in the UK. My concern is they view my current location as my residency which is not the case.

If I apply through the UAE I have to apply in person at the consulate and then have my passport taken away etc etc which seems a lot more hectic. My plan was to leave the UK in sept, stop by in the UAE for a few days and then come to thailand until roughly around Christmas and if I like it (which I hope I will) return after NYE.

Any advice would be much appreciated ✨

TLDR : Answer Summary
The DTV visa is applicable for application based on your physical location, not solely your residency. If you're in the UK at the time of application, you can apply there. Alternatively, if you're in the UAE, you should apply in person at the consulate. It's advised to contact the embassy for confirmation and requirements specific to your situation, as experiences with the new DTV visa may vary.

Do you have a valid driver's license with a UK address on it? This is sufficient. It's what I used for my application in Canada and it was approved.

What about a 60 day stamp with a 30 day extension?

From my experience of applying for the tourist e-Visa, you need at least convincing evidence that you are in the UK from when you apply until when you plan to leave. This means, if you are travelling from the UAE to Thailand, it's ok but you must show a flight ticket from the UK to the UAE before the flight to Thailand. IIRC the website won't restrict you from applying based on geolocation but in case it does, consider using a VPN and setting it to UK.

Nothing is written in stone, since DTV is so new, that there is no experiences based on facts at the moment.

If you are in UK, and find it most practical to apply from there, the contact the Embassy and ask them if it is possibel, and which proff they need.

You need to apply from the country you are physically located in (as long as that's not Thailand). So if you are currently in the UAE then apply there. If you are returning to the UK before coming to Thailand then you can apply in the UK as long as you are physically in the UK at the time

I wonder if you can apply online while being in Thailand online and then pick it up in one of the neighboring countries

would they require any proof that you’re in that country?

for evisa? What kind of proof?

@Daisy ******
also your plane ticket must be from the country you're applying in to Thailand

no tickets need to be submitted for DTV application. Just the flight number and arrival date. I'm leaving my home country and spending multiple days in different countries before I fly to Thailand. The flight I provided is from Istanbul to Bangkok, but I received my DTV from an embassy in Canada.

@Danny ******
you can't say what the requirements are for DTV because every embassy makes their own requirements. You can say what YOUR embassy requires.

I mean you're right, standards vary from embassy to embassy, but I stated my experience. To be clear you said "plane ticket must be from the country you're applying in to Thailand" which I'm saying is not the case as it wasn't the requirement that I encountered.

@Brandon ***********
that means I can’t even fly to another country first? That doesn’t make sense

@Daisy ******
you can have a layover, but must embassies require you to upload a ticket from where you are to Thailand if you want a visa.

@Brandon ***********
might they be ok if he uploads both tickets? If he's only in the UAE for a few days...
