In Bangkok you can wonder much further away from the most central places and still easily survive like a tourist compared to Hanoi in my opinion. But the area I enjoy the most in Bangkok is definitely Thonglor, try google and see if it's something for you. Cheaper but also good is Ekkamai that's nearby.
