Lived on Bohol/Panglao AND Chiang Mai. My brief conclusion (personal perspective): Pro PHI: Friendly and more open people mostly; most people speak basic or good English, one can easily stay up to 3 years and much longer on (tourist) visa, Dating life is great (I am mid thirty. Oh I miss the Pinays haha) Con PHI: I personally do not like the food at all (Lots of meat and fast food, vegetables are not part of daily Filippino meals in my experience; so hard to get a fresh and cold coconut...), life is more expensive -paid 2-3 times higher prices for same accommodation standard in Bohol and Cebu compared to Chiang Mai; traffic is wilder; infrastructure and service are often bad; many islands are prone to natural disasters. PRO TH: Value for money in Chiang Mai is really great; you have almost everything you need in this city; Thai food is the best in Asia, good infrastructe in Chiang Mai; also friendly but mostly more reserved people. CON TH: Can be hard to stay for many years- esp. when under 50 or not rich; many locals speak no or only basic English (there are exceptions of course); many farrangs and tourists (also depends on your area and if you want to avoid them or not) - As I said it is also my personal experience. Also depends on budget, place of living, preferences... Bangkok and islands are more expensive in general (accomodation...)
