True, that's their choice. I've been in Thailand for 15 years, never had an issue with immigration and never used an agent. I find the visa extension process to be quite straightforward - a little bureaucratic, but no more than I've experienced when living in other countries around the world.

Correct. Corruption has gone on for years, I've just never wanted to be part of it. Only needs one new broom and everything goes belly up. The new broom might be the changes to taxation. How will you explain the 800k which goes into your bank and then mysteriously comes out again? That'll be a laugh

If using an agent to by-pass the 800k financial requirements, keep in mind that the agent will deposit 800k into your bank account, which will mysteriously disappear after your visa is issued. In light of the small changes to tax collection and CRS, you may be asked where this money came from and where it went. If the tax office deems it as income, you may be slugged up to
