You should always visit Immigration as you start to prepare for an extension especially those that have financial requirements so you are preparing the documentation exactly as THEY require it.

yes but in those days cards were not as they are now and travellers cheques were how most tourists travelled with "cash"

The Embassy is not Immigration, they are telling you the worst case scenario, every case is different and depends upon individual travel histories ;)

Granted, some Immigration Offices will not issue then for a tourism entry stamp but the ones in the tourist areas and many others probably do. I'm pretty sure everyone that has recently posted after getting one was not just Bangkok based. Which agent do you work for BTW?
