I think they have an "express" service, for which you pay more? Also there's the risk of it getting "lost" in the post? In the good old days I could get it renewed at the BHC (or Embassy)

Yes the air quality for 2 months each year is an issue. Great place to settle though. Apartments are generally small though. And pricey compared to house rental. House purchase is legally problematic in Thailand.
