* I have recently gotten a DTV in Jakarta and am back in Thailand.
* I am a Japanese national & a framework to prevent double taxation is in place between Japan and Thailand.
* As I am planning to live and work here more than 180days per calendar year (most probably around 300 days per calendar year) , I believe I will be subject to personal income taxes in Thailand.
* I have previously worked under a working visa in Thailand, therfore, I have a tax ID in Thailand and Thai bank account.
Q: Has anyone here been in a similar situation—staying in Thailand for more than 180 days while working remotely for a company under a DTV visa—and had experience paying taxes in Thailand?
I'd appreciate any insights or experiences you could share!
Does anyone know of a site where I can read about the pros and cons of DTV, please? Looks like we have to pay taxes in Thailand as well as my home country?
What happens if, after applying for a DTV and providing business information (process, income, location, etc.), we renew our 180-day visa without leaving Thailand? Will we be taxed on foreign income?
Specifically, will we need to pay taxes in both our home country and Thailand?
Based on my research, it seems we would be double-taxed. I'd appreciate your feedback.
I found the process an absolute doddle and had my DTV processed quickly. I'm not seeing much in the way of what people are doing regarding Thai tax laws, however. Are people just getting their 180 day stamp each time they enter and not worrying about it? Or are most people residing elsewhere for part of the year too?
Just intrigued to know how people are navigating this.
Home country Germany with double taxation agreement
Centre of life Thailand (significantly more than 180 days per year)
According to the double taxation agreement, Thailand is entitled to income tax. However, in practice, the employer in my home country pays income tax as if I were staying in my home country, right? If I file my tax return in Thailand, I only pay the tax difference, right?
What about social security contributions? In my opinion, there is no longer an obligation to pay social security contributions (statement valid for Germany), so no such contributions are paid. At the same time, of course, I take out health insurance and pension policies myself on a private basis.
The options for DTV being admitting you are technically working in Thailand or just doing a soft power option like Muay Thai.
Based on the apparent new tax laws that were announced last year you would then be liable for tax and have just given them proof of your employment contract for example. But as far as I know these have yet to be enforced.
Is nobody concerned that they will come asking one day and expect to be paid large amounts of tax?
The way I see it the risk of doing a soft power option is they may require new contracts and such to re-enter at some point. But if you do the digital nomad route they may start asking for tax.
