Q. - What are people doing re the pending tax declaration for 180 day + non-O visa holders? There is a dual tax agreement in force with my country of origin and there seems to be a lot of potential tax deductions as over 65 and providing for a Thai family so estimate it will not be a large liability but the thought of more paperwork is not fun...BUT do we know of any procedural link to visa renewal based on the Thai tax return?? Thoughts welcome.
What does the situation with tax residency look like if I exceed 180 days? Has anyone applied for and obtained a TIN? Thanks in advance for your reply.
i arrived in hanoi a few days back and need some advice regarding my tax situation before I apply for the DTV. I stayed in thailand for 2+ years on ED visa and started working remotely as freelancer in early 2025. My tax residence during that time was in thailand and not in my home country because i stayed over 183 days in thailand. I don't have any residence in my home country anymore so i'm not obligated to pay tax there. The thing is I never applied for a TIN in thailand because it just wasn't possible in this constellation. How to request a TIN if you technically are not even allwed to work? I can provide old tax filings a few years back if thats requested, but its not even closely related to my freelancing work that i'm doing now as I had a normal 9-5 job back then. So what should I do? Should I now try to get a TIN here somehow retrospectively by contacting a tax lawyer etc? Besides that I have all requirements for the DTV (500k for 3 months, portfolio, client invoices, client contract, bank statements, etc). I don't want to apply for soft power because i actually need to WORK and don't have time for muay thai or cooking. Would appreciate any help.
I’ve made the decision to chase my dream of a happier life starting in Thailand. I will be spending the rest of the year preparing to leave and eventually leaving a high paying corporate job.
This thread has been an incredible help and I plan on getting my DTV to help make this happen.
Knowing my plan, If there was one piece of advice you could give me for this journey, what would it be ?
Guys i thought we had to leave every 6 months to avoid being a tax resident, but after researching i’ve seen that if you’re in thailand for more than 180 days within a year, regardless of if you leave every 6 months, then you are a tax resident. is this true? + if it is does anyone know the reason as to why we have to leave every 6 months and reenter? i’m just curious
How do personal tax rates vary between the U.K. and Thailand, would going Non Tax in the U.K. be more economical by paying tax in Thailand. My taxable income in the U.K. is around £18000 with pensions and interest payments. I will be having a consultation with a tax expert in the U.K. but he has no knowledge of the Thai tax system.
We're looking at heading to Thailand next year on the DTV, working remotely for an Australian client plus an investment property in Aus to fund us.
I'm looking for a clear answer on any tax implications if we were to stay for example
Jan to June (180 days) use our extension to push to December (360 days) come back home or travel for Christmas (approx 1 to 2 weeks) then spend another 180 days (new calender year)
All income would be in an Australian trust, so I assume nothing to declare in Thailand, so no tax implications? We would still be paying tax in Australia
I received a message from Krungthai Bank asking me to update my CRS/FATCA information. I am not a U.S. citizen and I currently hold a DTV visa in Thailand.
Recently I deposited 20,000 THB into my account (cash from my home country bank withdrawal). Could that be the reason ??
Has anyone experienced something similar?
What will bank do ? Will they close my account ? And charge me tax ?
