Is the carry-on luggage limit of 5 kg strictly enforced by Bangkok Airways?

Hi! I’m flying from Chiang Mai to Koh Samui this weekend via Bangkok Airways. We’ve read that the carry on luggage limit is only 5 kg which seems impossible since my carry on luggage itself weighs 3.15 kg. Has anyone had any experience recently where they haven’t weighed your carry on? Seems very unrealistic!! (They do allow 1 checked bag weighing 20 kgs)

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user expressed concerns about the strict 5 kg carry-on luggage limit on Bangkok Airways, particularly finding it unrealistic given their luggage's weight. Multiple comments shared experiences suggesting that the airline rarely weighs carry-ons, with many passengers reporting they have flown without their bags being weighed. Some travelers recommend strategic packing and even splitting items with companions to adhere to limits while avoiding fees for excess luggage.

If possible I do this .. If traveling with some one ..

Weigh on scales at empty check in desk.

Split out heavy stuff and give to friend.

Check in, where sometimes check hand luggage for weight.

Get heavy stuff back and into hand luggage.

Friend can do same.

Once managed 32kg of Turkish carpet as hand luggage.

Obviously depends on airline.

I think this route, BKK - USM, must be one of the most lucrative in aviation history. Since 1989, they've been having people's eyes out, 365 days a year. But it's ok, as they give you lounge access, Cheese sandwiches, coffee out of a vending Machine, popcorn and free wi-fi. And have you been in the gentleman's room in Samui airport ? That fishtank will take anyone's mind off the 400% premium they have just paid for their flight 🤣. No doubt there was never a concern for Bangkok Airways going bust during Covid. 12 flights a day. Regularly sold out. 5000+ baht a seat. 670 miles to BKK 🤠. So they're concern is getting those bums on seats and that flight up in the air without a hitch, rather than weighing hand luggage.

Yes of course. Monopoly. Cash Cow. Whoever set up that route will be sitting on a pile of cash. It's not my area of expertise, but I don't know of any other airport owned entirely by any one airline.

We flew 4 different flights around Thailand in December and January on Bangkok Air and were never asked about our carry-on bags. I had a large backpack with laptop and camera gear and they never asked to weigh it. Anecdotal at best, but that was our experience. Also, we did pre pay for extra weight on our checked luggage as it was over 20kg. Just be sure to do that if your bags are overweight to save money and hassle when checking in.

Have had my carry on luggage checked by both Thai Smile and Thai airlines both domestically and Internationally, is certainly a pain.

If it helps, they usually allow a carry on and a laptop bag. I've never been weighed on that airline domestic or int'l.

They don't tend to weigh hand luggage . When my checked luggage was overweight they suggested I transfer more into the carry on

They will check if your luggage is large. Normally Bangkok Air use small propeller planes so don't expect a Airbus or Boeing.

I did carry on my Samsonite backpack most likely 10kg no issue Phuket to Hat Yai. But we were two so normally they can split it across.

Depends on the route and the load. They have 22 A320s and 13 turboprops.
