Hello expats. I could use a bit of insight I guess? I am trying to figure out why immigration charged my gf so much for an overstay. The law states $500 baht per day. The last day on her visa was 1 July, she crossed the border on 31 July.
By my count 15k baht, but they clearly wrote her fine was $18,500. Why the extra $3,500?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking clarification on why his girlfriend was fined 18,500 baht for overstaying her visa in Thailand when, by his calculations based on a daily rate, it should have been 15,000 baht. Commenters explain that the additional charge may be due to an ignored immigration order, a possible extension denial, and that the fine may be calculated from the date she applied for an extension rather than her visa's expiration date.
To be completely honest I have never seen someone get a 7 day extension denied stamp then not leave during that 7 days.
They might look at it as you bought a 7 day get out of thailand stamp but you didn't get out, so you were charged overstay from the original expiration date of the stamp before the 7 days
sorry that happened, honestly that was the first time I've ever seen someone overstay that 7 day stamp. That's why I had to work the days overstay 37 on the form back and she was fined from Jun 24th
you apply for that stamp (the extension not approved one) to get OUT in a week, not to get it then stay another month π that's the only thing I can think of as it's exactly 37 days from June 24th to the 31st of july
Yes and it's NOT good for her whenever she seeks to re-enter Thailand. She IGNORED THE ORDER TO LEAVE THAILAND WITHIN 7 DAYS.

looks like she got that 7 day "application for extension not approved" stamp which gave her until July 1st and then stamped out the 31st.
Seems like they charged her from the 24th of June (the day she applied for that stamp)
UNLESS if you overstay that 7 day get out of thailand stamp you are assessed overstay from the date you applied for the stamp. because that's the only way to make the 37 days they wrote on the stamp for overstay work out
Why didn't she say anything to them at the border when she was clearing the overstay?
Just curious why would she spend 1900baht on a 7 day stamp then stay another month? That doesn't really make much sense π

She did her best but her English is nearly non-existent and she was scared they were going to throw her in jail for overstaying. So when they "insisted" she pay $18,500 she didn't put up a fight. She really didn't want to be stranded in Satun.
BTW the 24th-1st was the extension she got from Patong immigration. I don't understand why you say she got a "application for extension NOT APPROVED"... her extension WAS approved..... right???
you can get one 30 day extension per entry (tourist visa/free stamp), then if you apply for another extension (which was what she clearly did) she would get the stamp you show where it says right on it extension not approved and telling her she has to leave by xx date
So while she did get "more time" she got that on a specific stamp that says the extension wasn't approved and she had a week to get out
no, her extension was rejected and they gave her 7 days to leave the country. Those 7 days aren't an extension but a grace period to arrange things to leave.
