What happens if I overstay my 60-day Visa exempt in Thailand by 1 day?

ORIGINAL POSTER
If I stay 61 days in Thailand on a 60 day Visa exempt, what will happen at the airport when I depart on the 61st day? I've made a mess of my airline booking. Would I be best to apply for the 30 day extension at the immigration office? Trying to do what is most cost effective. Changing airline ticket would cost the most I think....

Thanks for all your advice. I'm about to post another question!

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you overstay your 60-day Visa exempt by 1 day in Thailand, you will likely face a 500 baht fine; however, this can sometimes be waived if you leave before the end of the first 24 hours of overstay. The issue of overstaying may be recorded in immigration systems, which could affect future visa applications. Suggestions include applying for a 30-day extension at an immigration office for 1900 baht or adjusting your flight to leave earlier to avoid any potential complications.

Usually a one day overstay will pay a 500 baht fine just after immigration. Over 20 years and probably 50 visits I maybe had two one day overstays. I think both just paid the fine, but no record of it in my passport. Using automatic exit gates now I wonder what would happen..? 😅

You’ll have to pay 500 baht for 1 day overstay and that is likely the extent of it. Overstays only get one banned from the country if they are extensive.

Better to pop into local immigration office and for 1900 baht extend a week or 30 days.

No comment at immigration, no fine, no problem coming this year, but, may be, just luck.

Better to rearrange for earlier departure, or file for extension.

Def not recommended to overstay your visa!

The correct thing to do is to make a visa on 30 days more. Then you get no problems later on. They will always could see in the computer if you have overstay

Ok I did exactly the same leaving Christmas day 2024 (so very recent experience).......At the airport handed passport over and after initial scan stamped out and directed to table behind the exit immigration guys......lady wrote in passport "no issue no fine 1 days grace" (in Thai)...will happily upload passport page if anyone wants to see it........There is no fine however if you go overstay into a 2nd day the one day grace is lost and you pay overstay on both days.......one proviso dont get picked up by the Police (for something stupid) prior to arriving at the airport as techincally you're on overstay for those hours

Best to go to the airport and you will pay 500 baht fine. Leave extra time to be processed by immigration. If you are not coming back for a while there is nothing to worry about. Thai in general are not sticklers for time and 1 day has not resulted in issues if you are not a frequent back to back visitor to Thailand.

For 1,900 baht worth doing the 30 day extension, take no chances. This MUST be paid in cash only. They do give you your change back once stamped as you collect your passport.

Have all you paperwork (tm7)completed before hand saves time, 1 passport photo needed too, if memory serves me correctly, photocopies of passport passport data page and entry stamp,in colour, your tm30, we also had to give the gps location of our accommodation and show them on our phone, once sat infront of the officer , so maybe write it down on piece of paper, to hand over. With our cellular number and email.

The officer really appreciated our forward thinking, really nice officers in Phuket.

Remember to cover your shoulders, to go in also, we saw a woman with skimpy shorts turned away , for disrespectful dressing , bottom cheeks showing bottom of her shorts !

Get there early before it opens, go in the ‘Q’ as could take time if you go there later in morning as it gets busy. We got there at before opening time we were 5th in line , in and out within 45 minutes!

I did this by mistake, over by 1 day

They pulled me to one side, waited for superior to come over

He checked my passport and sent me on my way , as it was a genuine mistake

Most you’ll have to do is pay 500 baht.

It would be best to go to immigration around day 55 to get an extension for 30 days. Pay the fee. Or you can pay the 500 baht for overstaying.

It has happened to me twice. The first time I contacted immigration in Bangkok with a few days to spare . I was told that the fee to extend would be more than the fine for a one day overstay and not to worry about it . As it was , they just made a note on my exit stamp and I was not fined.

The same thing happens 18 months and a couple of visits later , with the same result. On my last visit the immigration officer made mention of the note on my previous visa visa stamp and told me sternly not to do it again.

I am much more careful these days .

Actually you can be stopped at checkin from beginning with no return ticket within those 60 days. If you get stopped at immigration then it is airline company that is in fault and they have to send you home for free.

In that case they allow you or not is the solution to get a throwaway ticket within the 60 days to solve it.

If you now come in without problem then please do not do the overstay but go to immigration (1 week before) and extend it.

The imm would wave your 500 baht overstay fine if it's less than 24 hours,

However your overstay will be recorded on there system so if you plan on getting a long stay visa in the future, you might be denied a long stay visa,

I would suggest that you either change your flight to a day earlier or do the 30 day extension,

Again if you planning on visiting the this year again you would only be allowed a 2nd extension of 7 days,

The cost of extension is 1900 thb

You should never go on overstay if you can help it. In your case, you can help it, by getting the 30-day extension. At most offices you can do this anytime after you've been in Thailand for 30 days already.

For a 1-day overstay if leaving from an airport, normally the 500 baht fine is waived. You may or may not get an overstay stamp in your passport.

My friend went through immigration at 23:00 on the last day of her visa, the officers in Phuket tried to say she overstayed because her flight didn’t leave until 00:30. Stamp, fine and all.

I agree, it’s best to get the extension and do everything legally. The money isn’t so much the issue - it’s the stamp in your passport that you absolutely want to avoid.
