What are the consequences of overstaying in Thailand by 1 or 2 days?

Maybe a dumb question but here it is anyway :

Since Thailand is talking again about changing their 60 day policy to 30 days , I’d end up doing a 30 + 30 day extension when travelling there later this year.

Are there any repercussions for overstaying by 1 or 2 days ?

Looking at flights and with my dates it’s a better deal to stay the 61 or 62 days.

Thanks in advance

TLDR : Answer Summary
The penalties for overstaying a visa in Thailand, even by just 1 or 2 days, can vary. Generally, there is a daily fine of 500 baht for overstays. While many travelers report that minor overstays typically do not result in significant repercussions—provided they pay the fine upon departure—there are risks involved. Being caught by police or immigration during an overstay can lead to being detained and possibly facing a re-entry ban. Some advise against planning to overstay intentionally, as it can cause serious complications for future travel. Ultimately, it is recommended to accurately book stay durations to avoid overstaying altogether.

Overstay starts the day after your visa/exemption expires. 500 baht a day up to 20,000 baht. No affect if less than 90 days. However, if you wish to get a DTV or similar in the future the application asks if you have ever overstayed. This may result in a DTV rejection so try avoid overstaying if possible.

Why no relook at your business class flights and factor in for a 60 day stay rather than 61 or 62 days?

Luck of the Irish. You might pay a penalty or nothing at all.

If you book your flights now I would think you could be grandfathered in when you arrive?

never go into an overstay knowingly! Avoid it !
Jeremy ******
Why would you knowingly book to overstay?

If you overstay by a couple of days: 1. If you submit to Immigration and pay the designated fine, probably no further problem. 2. If you leave the country after this overstay, Immigration may put an overstay stamp in your passport which may cause you problems if you subsequently try and reenter Thailand. 3. If caught by police or Immigration (maybe even on your way into the departure airport), you would be subject to a prison stay, a big fine and excluded from reentry into Thailand for an extended time. It is never worth overstaying.

If you're stopped by police for any reason and are overstayed by even 1 day you will be put in jail until someone turns up with a ticket out of Thailand then escorted to the plane without a wash or change of clothes in handcuffs and banned from re entering for an unknown period. Do you think it's worth it?
Mma *******
Not exactly encouraged but 1-2 days is not frowned upon. Given the visa exemption is free, 1000bht is a nice little earner.

Highly unlikely it switches back to 30 days this year -

Officers at the Suvarnabhumi airport don't care the least about a few days overstay. It's just a routine.

No details of if or when they may change it back to 30 days. Hasn’t happened yet. It may not.

Most don’t have any repercussions of a one or two day overstay and just pay the fine of 500 baht per day on their way out.

The keyword there is most. If you happened to be stopped by police and found on overstay then that opens up a whole can of worms, that could potentially lead to a ban from entering Thailand.

Never plan to overstay. It probably won’t happen to you but if it does you’ll live to regret those can of worms.

500 baht per day overstay, payable to the immigration officer who puts the exit stamp in your passport.

@Levi *****
The immigration officer will take him to the desk where they handle overstay.

Why not just wait and see what the situation is when you land instead of assuming?

I need to fly business class because of a back issue. Need to book a few months in advance or the prices go way up.

exactly! Ever since they revealed underwhelming tourist numbers for the recent period, the talk of 30 days seems to have gone very quiet :)
