I understand credit cards are not used much. Can one open a bank account with a 90 day visa with intention of getting retirement visa?
Wanting to use the Q code instead of carrying lots of cash?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Expats in Thailand often inquire about opening bank accounts with various visa types, including a 90-day visa. While many banks require proof of residence, such as a rental contract, some may open accounts with just a passport. It's noted that showing a bank balance on a phone is usually insufficient; paper documentation is necessary. The retirement visa is often linked to fulfilling certain financial requirements, like maintaining a specific amount in the account.

So you cannot open an account without a rental contract? We are arriving Bangkok and staying in a hotel for 10 days then onto Hau Hin wherever will be for 2 to 3 months.
, I would think if you mention retirement visa, this will speed up your search. Also, it helps if you can go with a Thai partner (But I don't think this is the case for you). Also, the bank will check your passport for visa etc. But it also helps if they can see that you come to Thailand frequently. If buying the insurance helps to speed up the search, no harm in taking it. Some banks are more amenable than others. Search this group, there have been many discussions on people's experiences.
Biggest problem is finding a bank that will open account for you , but just keep trying and you will succeed .

Credit cards/apple pay/Google pay can be used in most major shops, full service restaurants, family mart/7-11 and Lotus's. It's the smaller places and street stalls and independent places you'll want Prompt Pay and Union Pay for (plus Makro and Supercheap)

What 90 day visa? Some visas are easier than others to open a bank account with.
But there's no law that states you must have a certain type of visa to be able to open a bank account. You can open a bank account on a tourist visa or even visa exempt with no visa at all.
It may prove difficult and you may need to try multiple bank branches as the tellers would rather say you're required to buy a 5000â‚ż insurance policy so they can get commission.
You can either keep trying until you find one willing to work with you, or hire an agent to assist.
Should make things much easier. Just tell them you need to open an account for your 1 year extension and plan to deposit 800,000b. With you already having the Non-O it "should" be easy
some visas are easier than others. You still didn't say which visa you'd be on

Not sure about how those particular visa types, but Thai immigration, in all its forms, normally prefers cash or at least bank account **printouts** -- with almost no exceptions. I have seen SOO many foreigners get held up at the border for merely "showing" their bank account balances on their cell phones. So do not even try -- bring cash and paper instead (and to be fair, many USA banks and US financial aid programs have similar policies when requesting proofs of incomes and resources -- and in some cases the US agencies are even more stringent about what they will accept for things like this)
