TLDR : Answer Summary
Aussies working FIFO and spending breaks in Thailand are exploring eligibility for the DTV (Digital Nomad Visa). Several commenters shared experiences and advice on visa options. While some have used visa exemptions frequently, concerns have arisen about increased scrutiny from immigration officials. Suggestions include pursuing soft power visas or multi-entry tourist visas (METVs) as alternatives, with one commenter noting that entering via visa exemption may not be sustainable long-term due to tourism regulations tightening.

Go with the Muay Thai option. 6 months of training should be about 15,000 baht and will cover 60 hours of training or 2 hours a week. I wouldnt rely on the tourist visa option going forward, as you have read they are cracking down and causing pain for arrivals. No need to mention your FIFO work really.

You're eligible for soft power reasons, you're not a remote worker in Thailand on a workation so that one would be unlikely.

I had been entering on visa exempt every month for past 2 years but recently been getting grilled at immigration as have alot of stamps and suggesting Iam not a tourist, I think Iam going to soft power route soon to solve future problems

A multi entry tourist visa works better for fifo.

And depending on how long you spend in and out, even visa exempt may work

I’ve never had a problem over the years. But yes I did get a DTV end last year. Saves having to extend visa if I stay longer for holidays also. But also better to try do the right with all the entering once a month.

No I've looked at the options but I just continued to enter through the Visa exemption all year. Now I have a job working remotely here for an Australian company so I'm applying for the DTV early in the new year

I entered on Saturday with no questions asked. That was my 14th time for the year. But that's me done now. Will leave February for a run to Vietnam to do my DTV
