I have a question about the dtv visa. Does the visa allow you to be in Thailand 6 months of the year only or does it allow you to be in Thailand 6 months at a time? In other words when your 6 months is up you leave Thailand for a short period and come back for an another 6 months?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The DTV visa permits holders to stay in Thailand for a maximum of 180 days at a time, after which they must leave the country briefly before returning for another 180 days. There is no limit on the total amount of time spent in Thailand per year. Additionally, while it is technically possible to obtain a Thai bank account and driver's license with a DTV visa, banks typically prefer established residency and may be reluctant to open accounts for tourists.

Can I get a Thai bank account and drivers licence with the the dtv visa?
Henrik *****
No, Banks are very reluctant to open accounts for tourists (DTV is considered asa tourist visa ), they want customers to have a permanent adress for at least 3 months, and be on a long term visa.

Reconsider if a Thai bankaccount is need-to-have or nice-to-have.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

Technically you can get a bank account and drivers license with any entry into the Country. The visa you hold isn't the determining factor

I am sure there will be some service that you can pay to get one opened. There seems to be a paid service for everything

Yep. Many agents can get you a bank account for a fee

what’s the determining factor

@Preston *********
I often wonder if it's just down to whether they can be bothered or not 🤣
Aaron ********
@Preston *********
the determining factor is the policy in the particular branch on that day.

Yes . Welcome!

You stay 6 months. Then you can extend 6 months in Thailand at the Immigration Department one time. I’m not sure what the Immigration Department is going to ask for an extension.
Henrik *****
After 180 days + 180 days extension, just travel out of Thailand og in again, then you can do another 180 + 180.

PS. visa is always counted in days, not months.
Marty *********
@Henrik ****
OK but what documents Immigration asking for when doing the extension?
Graham ******
@Marty ********
that is not known yet as nobody has reached that point and Immigration has not announced the extension requirements

Siam legal said to apply for the extension you have to provide evidence of the soft activity again

@Graham *****
Which is what I said in my original comment

Look at the website of Immigration office you will use ( they slightly differ in their requerements) , or if you are near the immigration, go there and get the handout about which documents are needed.

That goes for most cases involving Immigration.

But in this case, you have to wait until around 180 days after
****
2024, when DTV was introduced, since nobbody knows excactly what is needed, until the first who applyed for DTV, has passed the 180 days mark, and have asked for an extension.

Hopefully they will share their experiences with the rest of the group.

That’s how it normaly works in Thailand, the officers won’t know! until they have to know.

Right now, at a time. Expect this to change when they see how many are using DTV (tourist visa) for long term stays.
Stephen ********
@Tony *********
They are buy design made for long term stays. I expect the 180 days is simply the tax threshold. The fact they can be extended by a further 180 days is evidence of the Thai government's intention for these visas.

I know a fair few on retirement visas who are switching to the dtv for obvious reasons,, much longer and cheaper with the added bonus of not needing to commit financially to a Thai bank.

My wife and I both have dtv visas and if there is any question mark over them, it's possibly that they are slightly too easy to get, as far as status goes. I mean maybe there should be a minimum earnings capacity on them. But in reality, anybody earning normal western wages/salary will be able to live anywhere in Thailand very comfortably and most of those with a decent western salary will easily dwarf any retirees in spending power.

Honestly, the only changes I can see the government possibly making is raising the earnings/salary bar or assets level.
Tony **********
@Stephen *******
then why did they make it a tourist visa? It will be one to watch over the next 18mos.
Stephen ********
@Tony *********
It's labelled correctly, for their target market, most wont want residency.

If you have a working visa, or a retirement visa, it doesn't make you a national, or necessarily a resident to the Thia government. But your own country may well class you as a resident.

Nomad, digital worker, remote worker, bla bla bla.

Call it what you like. It's basically a "have you got enough money visa" to stay here , isnt it?

As I said, the 180 days is likely about tax and 99.99 percent of people, or dtv holders will draw a greater amount of money from another country. So the tourist label would suit those who it's aimed at.

Id say, even the retired (uk) might not have their pension payments frozen under these guidelines?

They don't care... All they care is for you to rent an apartment... There are $60 billion parked in empty real estates ruining the Thai economy

this! Ur completely correct. !!

Elías ********
@Tony *********
it was specifically designed for long term stays... 🫣 for a 5 year stay, exactly
Tony **********
@Elías *******
IMHO it is designed for multiple 180 day stays and it is a tourist visa. The question here is the frequency of entry and number of times per year. Yes they want long stay tourists (greater than 60 days). But I expect it will change over time considering a tourist would become a tax resident after 180. I'm sure they would prefer the tax revenue... Time will tell. Check back in a year or so.

@Tony *********
so if I get one now while it is per time with no limit and it changes after I get it will they honor the old rules or will it automatically change
Tony **********
@Preston *********
IMHO, it is the entry requirements that could change. Nothing will affect your current 180. But policies may change to only allow 1 every every year. Will still be valid for 5 yrs.
John *******
@Tony *********
this is based on no evidence. It is a multi entry visa. I have entered 4 times on mine already. For what you suggest to actually happen, they would need to change the wording on the visa in the psssport
Elías ********
@Preston *********
it's a 5-year stay visa by design, so no changes on this. what might change are the requirements for getting it.
David ********
@Tony *********
that's what the Thai government want. You think they are stupid they want these types of people in the country. They spend money not like some retired person counting their pennies.Dont be so cynical your here so chill let's others come also
Ken ***********
@David *******
I am a retired person living in Thailand, I live very comfortably and have too many pennies to count. You need to adjust your point of view. Most retirees in Thailand have good savings and investments.
David ********
@Ken **********
l don't have to adjust sh@#$t. Yes there are retirees living here as the intended reason of the retirement visa. But a large section as l said counting pennies. I am using this example to compare why the government have introduced the DTV for digital nomads. But yes this visa is also being abused but no matter it is what it is. I was just trying to highlight the post in this is just expect this visa to change. Has the retirement visa changed even though some abuse it NO. More bums on seats that's the bottom line
Graham ******
You stay up to 180 days, leave anytime then return with a new 180 day entry stamp
Aikins *******
@Graham *****
apparently you can extend for another 180 days but has to leave and come back after ther seconds term
Graham ******
@Aikins ******
yes but nobody has done that yet
Garrett ***********
6 months at a time. There's no limit on time in country per year
