TLDR : Answer Summary
The DTV visa allows for an initial entry of 180 days, which can be extended once for another 180 days. After that, you must leave Thailand and re-enter to obtain a new 180-day entry stamp, which can again be extended for another 180 days. This process can be repeated, but it requires exiting the country after each 360-day period in order to renew the entry stamp. Therefore, while you can extend your stay through this method, it's not feasible to remain in Thailand continuously for 5 years on the DTV visa without exiting regularly.

Apparently you can do 180 days then extend another 180 days then I think you need to leave and come back in then y'a get another 180days and then can repeat etc.. but don't forget they count 180 Days, NOT calendar months!! So I think y'a need to leave for at least 5 days per Yr?!

Mark Alx Holland Why should it be necessary to leave for 5 days a year?

After the 180+180 you can just start over with another 180+180 if you want, according to some unconfirmed information you might need 1 day out of Thailand after 360 days.

yeah.. true..

Just going by the whole 365 days a Yr.. some people still think the visa is 6months, which is not how they measure it..

Anyway.. as long as y'a don't overstay that 180days the no harm no foul!

No one can say for sure. People talk like they know are full of it. Even Thai immigration don’t know. We will have to wait and see. The confusion is that ministry who make up these visas are not the ones that enforce immigration or are responsible for immigration matters.

Only correct answer is no one knows 100%. Those that give you clear straight answer are talking out of their ass. Thai immigration enforces immigration matters can have different interpretation to foreign affairs who issues the visa. We will have to wait and see.

Nobody knows excactly, since nobody tryed it yet.

Can you get this visa while you’re in Thailand or have to get it in country of residence.
Tod *********
@Abrar ******
you get the visa from a thai consulate in another country. The DTV cannot be gotten IN thailand

AND

most thai consulates that do issue visas via the eVisa online system have notices on their landing page that says you physically have to be IN that country to apply.

This is the notice on the London Thai Embassy website

6+6, then you must leave. So apparently, you need to leave once a year and can then return and repeat

@Todd ********
this is correct.

You get the DTV visa, you ENTER thailand, get stamped in for 180 days, you can take ONE 180 day extension at the immigration office <- Don't ask how, because the visa program is 6 weeks old and no one knows how it works exactly yet 😛

What we do know is after that 360 days you have to EXIT/RE-ENTER thailand to get a NEW 180 day entry stamp (which you can extend one time for 180 days more at the immigration office) 🙂

You can do THAT for the validity of the visa

@Tod ********
but if you stay more than 180 days in a year on the thai soil you become a tax payer, is that correct ?
Roberto *********
@Florence ***********
Money you bring into Thailand CAN be assessed for tax. Whether you will actually pay tax depends on your own personal situation

@Roberto ********
Fill out a form with the TSA and bring in 50k, or whatever you need to last you the year.
Roberto *********
@Chris *****
Yeah but that's still assessable, as it's money you've brought into the country
Chris ******
@Roberto ********
Is it, even if you've brought it in before the six months has passed? Do you know this for sure?
Roberto *********
@Chris *****
The whole year is assessable, not just from Day 181 onwards, so yes if you've declared it, it's assessable

Thiri ******
As far as I understand, just one-time extension per entry

@Thiri *****
so exactly what they said then
