Does my husband need to be a UK resident to apply for a Thai DTV visa from the London embassy?

London embassy just said my husband has to be a UK resident to apply for the DTV. Nowhere on the Thai evisa website does it say you have to apply from your country of residence. I've emailed them back saying this and that there is countless evidence of people applying with hotel bookings, and asking for more confirmation. Did anyone else get a response like this?

Thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user received information from the Thai embassy in London stating that her husband must be a UK resident to apply for a DTV visa, which is not mentioned on the Thai e-visa website. The community suggests checking the embassy's website for accurate information and emphasizes the importance of having proof of residency or legal status in the UK when applying. Participants discussed potential documentation that might be acceptable, such as a driver's license or residence certificate, while also noting that some embassies have stricter requirements than others.

did you apply from UK and know this for sure?

Every embassy can set more strick standards. You are fighting an unwinnable battle and will only make things worse if you get to pissy.

Most embassies in Europe accept only residents, most embassies in south east Asia - accept applications from visitors too.

"Passport holders of all nationals with residence permits in the UK/Ireland/UK territories can apply for the e-visa through Royal Thai Embassy, London"

The Thai embassy website is very clear.

What passport does he hold? As Jennifer noted you want to check the specific embassy website, not the generic e-visa application website. See if you can get some kind of residence certificate to show you have status in the UK.

I hold a UK passport, he holds Australian. We will be staying there with friends for about a month and apply from there. Well that was the plan anyway. I was planning to show a letter of invitation from the friends and one of their utility bills. Husband would be on a tourist visa.

come to Thailand visa exempt, go to a neighboring country and apply. No sense fighting a losing battle with London.

thank you. Appreciate the advice

It's the embassy website you should be checking for requirements, not the evisa application site.

This is what it shows on the embassy website.

Could be they are taking ‘Residence Permits’ literally and exclusively to suit their purpose (reducing their workload).

but that's totally up to them.

@Elías *******
There should, of course, be uniformity because they are all Thai Embassies/Consulates wherever they are. I sincerely hope for the sake of applicants that they don’t do the nasty trick of accepting applications then cancelling/rejecting without stating reason.
Elías ********
@Christopher **********
that won't never happen. Even local Immigration offices in Thai cities and provinces have slightly different rules or procedures for visa-related matters.

@Elías *******
Not regards basics. Amount of money/income for extensions is standard (for example). Proof of physical presence in any country should be standardised. There is no excuse for cancellation/rejection without stating the reason.

every country is not the same, so every Thai embassy isn't going to be the same either. They adapt their policies according to the country the embassy is in.

citizen , permanent resident, or holder of a work permit is the case in most countries

since when? I'm seeing so many have popped over to random countries for a couple weeks and shown a hotel booking.
Michael *******
That’s not for long term visas, such as retirement etc

You must be legally in the Country you're applying from, ie legally residing in that Country

how do you know this sorry?

@Ange *******
It's a requirement to prove you're legally in the Country you're applying from.

Try using his UK drivers licence as proof of residence in UK
Lynnette *******
Is he in UK? He must have an address surely?
Lynnette *******
You have to have evidence if living/staying in the country you apply from. So if he's applying in UK, and he's not British, he will have proof he's there legally and some sort of address.
Ange ********

@Lynnette ******
by legally do you mean on a tourist visa?
Lynnette *******
@Ange *******
no. You enter the country legally. Some need visa some don't. Surely you know how he came to be in UK? The thai embassy in every country set the criteria for applying.

@Lynnette ******
of course I'm doing things legally but I'm sorry I don't know what you mean. We are not in the UK yet, we are staying there for a few weeks/ month with friends. I hold a UK passport but my husband holds Australian. I have dual citizenship. He will be there on a tourist visa. And I plan to get a letter on invitation from our friends and show one of their utility bills for address. Nothing illegal, we just don't live there.
Lynnette *******
@Ange *******
why doesn't he apply from where he is? If you think his proof of residing in UK is going to be an issue he can go to Thailand on 60 day visa exempt entry, then pop over to another country to apply. One where proof of being in the country is an entry stamp and hotel booking.

yeah this is looking like our best option, thank you. The embassy where we are moving from in Cyprus is closed down.
Lynnette *******
@Ange *******
I'm not sure if anyone who's non British resident but a legal visitor has applied in UK. It's the use of the word "residency" that seems to be the issue. Right to enter and stay in UK on a visa might be considered "residing" but it's a bit vague.

yeah thank you so much. I'll wait for their final response but find other options. Thanks heaps
