What are the requirements for applying for a DTV – nomad visa from the UK?

Dec 9, 2024
9 days ago
I completed my application for DTV - nomad type online from the Royal Thai embassy London. There was no mention prior to my application regarding a couple of very important points : 1) can only apply if you are a permanent resident in Uk. ( I’m a nomad- what’s the point??). 2) Have to provide an e-ticket proof of flights from UK to Thailand. I’m already in Asia. Bloody stupid. Would never have applied from that embassy, pay the fee, if I had proper facts prior.

Anyway, hope this useful knowledge will help others to have an informed application process.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster expressed frustration regarding unexpected requirements when applying for a DTV – nomad visa online from the Royal Thai Embassy in London, particularly the necessity of being a UK resident and providing an e-ticket for flights to Thailand, despite currently being in Asia. Several comments emphasized the importance of reading the embassy's guidelines prior to application and reiterated that one should apply from the country where they are physically located to avoid issues.

Do your research first next time then. Even a cursory review of posts in this group reveals a number of members posting/asking about residency issues.

Not sure what kind of sympathy or response you expected… just seems you’ve come here to moan. Seems like a personal problem.

I applied with the US embassy and the only option they had to prove I was currently in country is that proof of location question - for which I used a bill that had my name and address.

what did you enter for that option? just curious. I wasn’t even in the US the whole application process but I had a permanent address there so I guess it was easier for me

was in country when applied, and have UK passport and Drivers license w original home address from when I left UK years ago. However, do not have address there anymore. Used my DL as proof of being in then country at time of application.
John **********
Anonymous participant you should always stay in the country you apply from until the visa is granted

So if I'm a tourist in Cambodia,can I use address of my home country & not mention I'm in Cambodia now ? I prefer using my local embassy bcz I will not need to translate my documents.

I applied to the us embassy (dc) from ho chi minh. i’d only been warned against being inside thailand when / while I applied. and I had access to recent mail going to the us address I applied from.

when you started the e-visa process, did you put your location as HCMC and select the embassy in the US?

They worked out your application was fraudulent so they spanked you for it

Reading the instructions might have been a good idea before you applied then you would have had the "proper" facts

Where are you in Asia?

Anonymous participant helpful not. If you're in a country in Asia that is not Thailand then you simply apply through the relevant option for the country you are physically in, either directly at an embassy or online. But you need to be physically present in the country

Wen I applied in uk I had only had to give intended flight no didn't have to show actual ticket or onward ticket

I guess each application is unique, from London I was asked for an e ticket with my name and confirmed seat numbers. I just paid an extra £100 for a flexi ticket 🤷‍♂️👍

@Colin *******
when did you apply? I applied 14th November and they asked for an air ticket as an additional request.

I applied in August they didn't ask for ticket I just gave intended flight no

For a DTV you do not need an onward.

What facts did you not have? You apply in London, you should be in England. If you are in Asia then you should apply at an embassy in that country.

I applied in London and haven't ever lived in the UK. Work that one out!

@Alexander ************
you go to London and apply. No requirement to have lived there only to be present in the UK when you apply

@Alexander ************
- You are supposed to apply in the country you are physically in. If you applied via London and were not in London, and were successful, that was luck. If they had known, they would have rejected.

@John ******
I'm sure the employees at the embassy know who can or cannot apply. Thanks for your concern though

- It literally states in on the entry page for the e-visa and is posted on their webpage.

where is the embassy in asia?
Johan **************
@Ben **********
Yes, Thailand has several embassies in Asia. For example in Vientiane (Laos) or Singapore. Here is a list of all of them around the world:

@Johan *************
, the Thai embassy in Singapore does not process DTVs.
John **********
@Leong **********
i believe it does, but not for Singapore citizens
Leong ***********
@John *********
, I think you mean they will not process DTVs for non Singapore residents.
John **********
@Leong **********
nope, the other way round. Singapore and Thailand have an agreement not to charge each other's citizens for visas and to date they can't agree on how to handle the DTV in that context
Leong ***********
@John *********
, where did you hear that from ? I don’t see that listed in the above link.
John **********
@Leong **********
it's not but it is correct, try searching in the group

I don't know about this but they do have it listed on their website:

If you can’t be arsed to check here , you’ll get no sympathy what so ever

If you’re already in Asia and decide to apply in London and get denied, that’s on you. You should apply in the same country where you’re currently staying. Most embassies outside Southeast Asia only accept applications from citizens or residents of that country or nearby ones.
Roy ********
@Georgijus ***********
But a tourist can also apply ? If I'm a tourist in Cambodia, can apply there, right ?
Victoria ******
@Roy *******
he said countries outside of SEA
Dany ********
You could just provide an „onward ticket“ which is like 10€$£… but the eVisa portal clearly states that you need to be present in that country.

with a little more research you would have find easier ways, better options. i.e. evisa through Vietnam

You should simply have read the Embassy website before applying.

You are meant to be in the country of the embassy/consulate you are applying to when you apply - that is stated pretty obviously.

You MUST be in the country you apply from . It is very clear.
